The example above is just one of many that prevents me from trusting my government. Governments have lied and stolen from their people all through out history and yet most people blindly put their trust and faith in them. WTF is wrong with people!?!? lol

My feeling on the two parties can be summed up in the following way: The Right thinks that given their druthers every person will work hard, go to college, and start a family: The Left understands the flaw in this logic and is overprotective of the stupid and lazy in our society.

Just as an example of bad Leftist policy: In Massachusetts a family of four with someone working and making say $300/week can get an additional $600/month in food stamps, $800/housing, free health care and other goodies. Now if the second person in the family goes to work and makes $300/week they lose all the benefits but Health Care. Why on earth is the non-working person ever going to find a job under these conditions????

That said, I'm not sure what is worse, the bad leftist policy described above or going back to the days when seniors were FORCED to go to the "Poorhouse" (yes there really was something called the poorhouse), poor kids could be basically conscripted into work by their parents, and so on.

I don't know a lot about every President since they don't teach much in school unless you where a founding father, JFK, or involved in a war but I'm a big fan of Grover Cleveland & Thomas Jefferson. Lincoln would make the list as probably the worst imo.

A lot of people don't realize what a tough situation he inherited when he took office in 1981.

The economy has terrible, inflation had been horrible for the past 5 years, and our standing as world military leader was quickly slipping. We were getting tested from all directions, including the USSR (with their invasion of Afghanistan and defiant massive nuclear buildup) and Iran (with the hostage crisis that lasted for over a year).

By 1984, the economy was great.

The USSR fell in 1991, largely because of their attempts to keep up with the US in the arms race. Today, when you mention threats to our national security, nobody even thinks of Russia anymore.

Some of these fortunate events weren't all Reagan's doing, but his policies and beliefs led the way for a lot of this to happen. The 1980s would have played out a lot differently -- and in my opinion, a lot worse -- with someone different in office.

The deregulation of telephone long distance also took place during Reagan's time in office, which was an early building block in setting the stage for what was to come with the inexpensive and free market communications choices we have today. Prior to 1984, long distance calls were extremely expensive, and much of that was artificial due to regulation. The second half of the deregulation of telecommunications occurred in 1996. While that bill was flawed (because it had provisions which essentially allowed large companies to monopolize radio and television stations), it did bring all telecommunications to the free market, and led to the very accessible model we have today.

Reagan is a Top 10 president in my opinion, and in 30 years may move way up or down depending on how his policies play out. Like I said to someone else; I think it's hard to judge recent presidents fully because not everything is known about their presidencies impact, so I personally give Reagan an Incomplete at this point until I see how deregulation and supply side economics plays out in the long run.

I don't know how instrumental Reagan was in the arm's race (where as you said we basically forced the USSR to devote money they didn't have to Arms and Space Exploration) but he was the perfect figurehead for that period in our history, a calm, cool, and collected guy, who talked tough.

I would disagree with you on the Hostage Crisis thing, which seems to have een a lot of behind the scenes maneuvering BEFORE the 1980 election, and that the alternative to Reagan would have been markedly different, because it would have been George HW Bush, who I think gets a pretty bad rap --- there is no way the US was going to let Carter run the country for 4 more years, so if there was no Reagan HW would have been the nominee.

Andrew Jackson was the best president. You see, when he made the Five Civilized Tribes, the Cherokee, Seminole, Creek, Choctaw and Chickasaw walk to and relocate to Oklahoma (called the Trail of Tears) in 1830, he allowed those Indian tribes to keep their black slaves. So the slaves also made the walk to Oklahoma, something not to many people know today. It's the reason there is a black population in eastern Oklahoma today.

Now, what president could be more kindhearted than that? He let them their slaves. Just a very kindhearted man.

PS While the Indians of Oklahoma still bitch about having had to walk the Trail of Tears, they never bitch about their black slaves having to walk it too. As a matter of fact they never mention their black slaves at all. I wonder why.
