Dylan takes in a little of everything from 19th century poets to Japanese novels to early musical artists and creates something hard to define and you either get it or it’s not your cup of tea. Nothing was ever close to me. Every screen name I had on early poker sites was some Dylan reference. I was Idiot Wind or Napoleon in Rags or Blind Willie McTell or half a dozen on other sites just for conversation starters. You can kind of see some Buffet influence in that Caribbean Wind period of Dylan music. Where they are most similar is in their work ethic. Both seemed to be in perpetual touring mode and both are on a boat somewhere when not touring. Dylan has unique artistic longevity. Most of Buffets best stuff was written in a smaller window, where Dylan might have legit done his best stuff later in life. Less influential, but better imo. Deeply layered.Quote:

Buffet concerts were like a summer rite of passage. I probably went to 15? His music was secondary. He created that niche and it was just a festive always good time.

I remember reading in Sports Illustrated when I was a kid that Bill Walton spent his waking hours that weren’t spent on the court listening to Dylan. There was a generation that thought his lyrics held some divine meaning.
The only modern equivalent might have been Vanilla Ice
Never saw Buffet though he always played Fenway Park in recent years. Buffet was the soundtrack to the Caribbean for me. A day trip excursion on a catamaran drinking their free rum punch at 10am in the sun with Buffet on the boat’s speakers. Perhaps those lyrics revealed the secrets of life too.
