Have three dogs of our own one of which has an abuse history of her own before we got her. I came slowly to the dog and I figured if it was ok with the kids I wouldn’t have to worry too much. I was trying to reassure it. Oh well.

It’s possible that the kids next to it petting it made it more prone to be defensive, as it might already have known the kids but not you. But it sounds like your familiarity with dogs lulled you into a false sense of comfort with this strange dog. Glad it was only a minor incident.

I had to report it to the city animal control. I hate to tell her but she’s going to likely have to file in her renters insurance which is required where we are at because I’m all but certain my medical insurance is going to refuse to pay. They did the same crap when my wife was in a car wreck oct 2019 and had to get our auto insurance to pay out their portion to get the remainder paid by medical that wasn’t paid for by our auto insurance. (Was her fault).

Anyway just sucks my hand hurts and swollen. I hope to avoid hiring a lawyer at this point but I’ve got two to go to if I need to or it comes to it. AZ doesn’t have a one bite rule it’s an absolute liability state when it comes to dog bites...

Only thing she’s going to incur is a claim on her renters insurance and Incorrect it did have to be reported because it was a dog bite Les. By law a dog bite has to be on the record even if it’s your own dog. (My in laws had that issue several years back when their dog Lucy and their other dog got into it and my FIL tried to intervene and actually lost the end of his finger as a result. If it requires medical attention then yes it has to be reported... also it helps verify the validity of the claims the dog has had its shots and is current.).

Now let me add the dog was not on a leash and wandering like it was lost and scared. It didn’t want to dog to run off and get hit by a car which was a legit concern. I also had no reason to suspect the dog would suddenly lunge and snap at me it hadn’t barked or growled or anything originally when I sat down next to it to get the phone number off the tag. Again I didn’t actually realize who it belonged to as I knew she had two dogs but had usually only seen the pittie mix outside.

In my 47+ years I’ve never had a dog bite me when I’ve tried to help it if lost or anything else. I’m very good at picking up cues from a dogs body language and actions.. it was just a bad luck rivered type situation. I didn’t yell or anything at the dog. I actually felt bad for the poor dog which made me even more so be concerned it was scared and possibly hurt. Truthfully I don’t see how I couldn’t have avoided it. I know your gonna say just ignore the dog etc. Well unfortunately I actually give a shit about folks and animals more then I do myself. Hell I ran over a dog by accident little over a year ago who’d gotten loose obviously and had no chance to stop. I felt horrible about it and actually questioned if there was anything I could’ve done to avoid having it happen, but the truth is I had no warning by the time I saw the dog it was literally at my front bumper on the drivers side and caught both left sided tires... sue me for actually giving a shit whatever man you have your opinions and biases means nothing to me.
