I don't even see what the big deal is. She is representing a district that is 80% mostly poor, uneducated black and Latino people. Given that, her constituency voted her into office because she espouses policies that they believe represent their interests. That is how democracy is supposed to work. If actually instituted on a wide scale most of those policies would probably destroy the country IMO. But I don't exactly expect poor minority 1st generation immigrants living the Bronx and Queens to appreciate these kind of political/economic nuances.

It would be funny and ironic if the Democratic Party was forced to veer sharply to the left because a populist far left figure became super popular with the Democratic base. I think there would be much more resistance than the Republicans had with Trump though, because at the end of the day Trump's policies aren't particularly radical, his methodology and personality is just highly irregular (and many would argue unethical).

Throw out his questionable personal behavior and methods, what has he actually done policy-wise that is a big deviation from what you would expect from a generic Republican president to try to do? Even the travel ban and immigration stuff isn't that big a jump from what was going on in Obama's presidency. The difference is this kind of stuff was done quietly and more diplomatically before; and now him and the media are highly politicizing and charging everything.

Anyways, discounting his personal behavior and the effects of him and the media constantly attacking each other, and I think it is fair to say Trump's presidency is closer to a typical Republican presidency than Cortez (or another socialist) would be to a typical Democratic presidency.

Overall, we as Americans should be happy she won. Much like Trump will ultimately do with the Republicans, she will show the reasonable Democrats who preposterous and unsound the fringe of the party is. It could possibly least to reaching middle ground at some point in the near future.

2) Alienating our Western democratic allies is asinine and feeds into strengthening Russia’s and the far right’s power in Eastern Europe, as well as motivates China and Europe to jointly say “Fuck You” to the US, neither of which a “typical” Republican presidency would have done.
3) And a “typical” Republican presidency would never have relentlessly attacked the integrity of the press, nor continuously disparage the FBI and greater judiciary like Trump has. All the Democratic white progressives are in for a very rude awakening when the Democratic Party base becomes overwhelmingly minority. Because if given a choice, most minorities aint voting for no white devil.
