A lot of people in the Scandinavian countries, for example, absolutely detest the high tax rates there.
Also, the level of crime plays into this, and that's an apples-to-oranges comparison, as each country has a different history, culture, and population makeup, thus making crime difficult to snap your fingers and reduce.
No matter who is in power, the US will continue to have a high violent crime rate for a long time, compared to other first world countries. The best that can be done is to slowly reduce the crime rate, which was happening from 1991-2013 until Obama had to create a distrust for the police and screw it all up.
