I think generally the left wing MSM feels guilty for giving Trump so much free publicity that allowed him to be elected, and their jihad against him is an attempt to atone for this and "right a wrong". That being said, my problem with their execution is IMO they are actually intentionally making things much worse. For good or bad, I think the MSM has decided that the best strategy is to basically sabotage his presidency and run the country into the ground as much as possible (with plenty of help from Trump and his incompetent administration), to give him as little chance as possible of being re-elected, and that getting him out of office 4+ years earlier will have such long-term benefit that it will outweigh the short-term costs.
However, I am pessimistic this plan will actually work, because I fear:
a) their blatant partisan attacks are galvanizing the right around him, and may actually strengthen his chance of re-election
b) the damage they are doing to the country now won't be worth it in the long run
