If you happen to have a political posistion at the end of the race you use the fame/$$ to become a chairperson on whatever committee you are on. If you don’t you go get a radio show or end up on MSNBC or FOX (or the DNC, looking at you Howard Dean) and take in the $$.

Even with the diminished gravitas of the presidency under Trump, that still has to be worth more than legal fees I’d think?
