Well they tried the centrist route with a candidate that was practically on the right. Going to the other end of the spectrum towards the "means of production"-crowd can't be too wrong. It appears that people that find those candidates appealing actually vote.
The "nouns matter"-crowd is likely even more toxic at this point and appealing to moderates might be a complete waste of resources. Moderates suck at voting and they are never getting their relatives/friends to vote.
For normal people under 30 socialist has mostly lost it's negative connotation. Going too hard and fast to that direction might be a wrong move, but it's likely becoming more correct every year. Nice thing about old people is that they die.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez likely has her heart in the right place while she promises to work towards ideals that are out of reach for decades. It's not the worst lie to believe in. Candidates like her should appeal to similar people on the left that Trump appealed on the right.
