Actually one of the biggest hallmarks of fascism is thought policing.
Only one political narrative is allowed. Those who go against the narrative publicly are punished, shamed, and discredited. Corporations which do not go along with the narrative are also punished, and they know this, so they publicly take the positions expected of them.
Censorship runs rampant, but is defended by claiming that the other side is "pushing dangerous ideas", "attempting to destroy our government", and "misleading people".
