There is always an ebb and flow to our politics in this country. Right now it's the conservatives turn. I suspect in a few years the liberals will get their shot. Each time the pendulum swings the in power party puts something in place and we see if it works or not. It's a better model than most of the world.
Yeah. But it just seems different now. The country may have disagreed on the whole slavery thing, but at least there was a common culture to fall back on. Most of the people were nominally Christian and celebrated the same holidays and believed they were generally good and not evil. Now it seems there is just too much cultural self loathing, and differences are celebrated too much, and there is too much denigration of our common culture. I am not sure any society can survive this level of self loathing and cultural disjointedness.
I am not even saying our culture is/was all that good. But that isn't the point, the point is the majority of people have to at least think it is good and have common beliefs and traditions, or it all just falls apart.
