Great point, I never really thought about until I saw Mayweather do it in his last fight.

Shows tremendous skill, patience, training, etc not to just get the insta-win when it's there. To have the confidence to basically air the fight out for whatever reason is remarkable.

Great point about USADA also. I dk if they went this overbearing drug policy route due to legal concerns or what but it is hard to argue the sport is anything but clean, to it's own detriment - but could possibly stave off future lawsuits/whatever if somone got hurt really bad from some roided out/PED monster that's out of his skull.

The head of USADA was on Rogan and the guy is basically judge/jury/executioner for all things PED and he is not fucking around. It's almost like he's getting paid on commission.

If they pull this off with all the bullshit stipulations (no kicks, elbows, knees, takedowns, etc.) then this basically becomes a boxing match with 4oz gloves.

Poirier is a favorite over Gaethje. That doesn't seem right to me.

I think its Poirier having an absolutely massive experience advantage.

Gaethje has had one high level fight and he got his shit wrecked. He's not going to TKO Dustin via leg kicks in the first.

Full disclosure I cant actually remember watching Gaethje fight, I'm just going off his record.

Id probably put something down on Gaethje TKO and hedge with Dustin decision? But it doesnt honestly feel super exploitable at face value.

I just think its gonna be a battle of attrition, and Dustin likely won't survive it. If he stays on the inside with Justin, he's gonna be going chin to chin with a guy who never steps backwards and can take almost any shot, and if he stays at range, his legs will in fact get destroyed. Dustin is breakable, and Justin is almost certainly gonna walk forward until the fight is over one way or another, and I can't see Poirier winning that battle. 3 or 4 rounds tops, IMO. Gaethje is already the favorite in some places.

We need more Rory Mac in our lives.

i can see it. i can also see gaethje getting pieced up and/or spending 15 minutes on his back. usually when you have someone with dustin's experience against a young snappy up and comer with like, literally no high level opponents, thats how it goes.

but youre totally right and we both know it; maybe gaethje is the real deal and just absolutely steamrolls.

two thoughts-

1) i fucking hate that whole 'i got into this to put on a show' shit. it does not jibe with what got me interested in mma. im just putting that out there, i consider it the least attractive, most utterly bullshit element of this new crew of fighters and im seeing/hearing it more and more often.

2) if this guy thinks hes going to be clocking houses with "5 or 6 more fights" after back to back losses i mean, god bless... dustin is tough but his specialty is exposing and exploiting B level fighter flaws. maybe focus on the next fight, my guy, because if you fuck it up, youre bum hunting on undercards for 15k/15k before taxes and you better hope you dont get dropped by some random in the process.

Not having the talent to win, and still being able to put on a good fight by shear effort is an admirable/marketable trait, imo. Reminds me of Guida back in the day.

if they give us main events like last weekend, I could care less what the motivations are. For honor, for glory, for entertainment, for money, for jesus, allah, or zenu. I also would prefer not to hear it sometimes, but given the results, hard to argue with.

He's also pretty darn talented. A clear top 10 guy and he's given two top 5 guys a hell of a fight. I'll buy every PPV Gathje is on and I'll be sure to tune into his free fights as well.

yeah, the ufc don't care if he loses if he's putting on fights like that. hell, he was one of the few guys from any small org to come in to the ufc making over 100K a fight right out of the gate, because these fights are what he does. they'll give him the Leonard Garcia/Phil Baroni/Dan HArdy leeway, he won't get cut after even 4 losses like this, or 5.

im not looking to argue it because im not like, emotionally invested, but i see in Gathje a guy whose chin is going to go soon who doesnt take care of himself in the ring by utilizing his wrestling.

im just putting it out there.

Off Topic, this is so weird that you brought him up. I took my kids out to lunch, yesterday, at some cool place up in McHenry, IL called Epic Deli. There was a signed letter from Bas Rutten (and a caricature of him as well) on the wall, along with some signed photos of Clay Guida. I think he and Jeff Curran train up there a lot.

he's talked about that at length himself, since his early champ days in the wsof. everyone knows how its gonna end, and he made peace with it a long time ago. might be 2 more fights, might be 10 more. he even said last week i think that 5 is the most likely number.

I didn't catch the undercard but the main card is solid. I like this fight between Sterling & Johns.

Lee looked great tonight and he had a ton of cardio. The UFC is giving him a push so if the McGregor vs Khabib fight doesn't happen I wouldn't be surprised if they give Lee the fight. Lee just might be the future of the division.

I read the last UFC had 900k buys. That's about 2000 per state - seems like a lot but WTF do I know

You're way off, but might just be mistaking what you read. The last ufc ppv was closer to 300K. The last free show, the Atlantic City Fight Night, got like 950K viewers.

Thanks... I read they may got to 6 ppv shows a year. 300k buys still seems like a win based on that card. I can't imagine the next one gets anything close but I am wrong about everything else so I doubt this time is different.

That's how I see it going down as well. The washed up version or Fedor has a speed advantage on the washed up version of Sonnen. Sonnen got by Rampage just because he's a fat pile now.

interesting thing about UFC 225, but last night's Bellator was in Illinois also, so this would apply to them too. They probably didn't get the same types of warnings, unfortunately. I wonder how many fighters will get hit for this zero tolerance of cannabis? I'll guess 2 combined from the 2 events. We'll find out in a few weeks.

Despite WADA (and thus USADA) rules that allow fighters to have 150 ng/ml of marijuana in their system while in competition, the state of Illinois (along with Texas, and others) have a zero-tolerance policy towards it.

That means that testing for even a trace about of marijuana metabolites will get you in trouble there.

Recently, MMA Weekly posted an article stating that the UFC has sent a letter to fighters participating on the card warning them about this. Here’s an exerpt:

“Because of Illinois’ no tolerance policy for marijuana, we recommend that marijuana use be discontinued for anyone participating on the UFC 225 card between now and the event.”
