Yeah we definitely need to question the data, but at the same time using everything available globally is going to be our best indicator of when we hit the peak and the curve starts to flatten.

re: usa flu deaths the 18-19 flu season recorded as 34k deaths so if this season we end up above that definitely comes into question.

I mean it's a global event so if the data in some countries doesn't match up with everyone else then we can ask questions.

Identified their high risk cases from the sect from which most of their cases derived, and isolated them. The time to do what they did was six weeks ago. It’s impossible to replicate at this point. Let's consider the NBA players who were recently found to have COVID-19. Several were asymptomatic. So this is either due to testing false-positives (which I've heard are somewhat of a problem) or that there are a lot of asymptomatic COVID-19 cases out there.

It would make sense that, aside from places like the NBA where everyone exposed gets tested, the test would typically be done for those who are showing symptoms. This would REALLY skew the death rate artificially high, since the asymptomatic wouldn't get counted in the disease stats.

I am bringing this up because there is one and only one scare factor separating COVID-19 from the seasonal flu, and that's the supposed 10-30x higher death rate.

If it turns out this is another Swine Flu -- an illness said to have infected 20% of the US population but killed just 0.02%, then this is much ado about nothing, and we are ruining our economy over a "pandemic" which really is no more dangerous than the seasonal flu we've come to accept as part of normal life since all of us were born.

This really needs to be examined more closely.

I've been thinking about this a bit today. What is the endgame here?

Countries like Japan, South Korea, China and Singapore are all over this virus.
What are they going to do when there's virtually no new cases?
If they relax the lockdown it's just going to flare up again or someone will introduce it from another country.

I'm thinking there is only two possibilities.
Continued social distancing and keeping the infected as low as possible through isolating known cases and also enforcing lockdowns, so the health system is not overwhelmed, and basically wait for a vaccine.
Or you allow the virus to spread while trying to keep it a level that we can deal with until enough people have caught it and are immune. I read an article a few days ago and the 'expert' reckons that once 10% of the population have caught this we will see new infections decline as these immune folks will act as transmission blockers. He went further and said once 20% have caught this and recovered the virus will cease to be an issue and we can return to business as normal while our health system easily deals with new infections.

I'm thinking the latter. Rolling lockdowns that are stringent when the system is overloaded and relaxed somewhat when the caseload is being handled by the health system...but still lockdown to some degree.

I think there is a huge amount of asymptomatic folks who are falling through the cracks and not being tested.
The real death rate could be ten times lower then what's being reported... maybe less.

That doesn't invalidate the possibility of what I'm saying.

If this is highly contagious and it spread big time in Italy, it makes sense that a fair number would die, even if actual death rates are on par with the flu.

These basically unenforced isolation policies by some of the governors will be the death of us yet. The entire nation should be on lockdown right now. Roosevelt didn't let the governors run WWII. All schools closed. The National Guard should be called up in all states. There should be no cars or pedestrians out there at all except for buying food, gas, pharmacy items, and health services. Other than people driving to work at these places, trucks should make up the rest of the traffic. You can't do this in a half hearted way. Stay home means stay home, asshole.
