I would be surprised if 30+ years ago in Alabama a 30 something year old man having a "consensual" (as consensual relationships were defined back then) with a 14 year old was even a big deal. It was probably illegal (maybe not? I really don't know) but it was one of those things that no-one in that time and place really thought was all that morally wrong. Sort of like how drunk driving wasn't considered a big deal 30-40 years ago, and is a very big deal today.
I do think it is very disingenuous to morally judge someone who is in their 70s and get all indignant over for something that happened 30+ years ago in the deep South, when what was considered morally right and wrong at that time and place was very different. But I am absolutely certain the right wing media would be pulling the same thing if the position was reversed, so I am not going to claim this disingenuous indignation and outrage is particular to the left.
