Saw this sign in Los Angeles. I love how they try to scare people into believing they'll be towed the second they walk off property. Nope. State law requires a full hour to pass before the car can be towed.

Predatory towing has NOT ended in Nevada!
Remember how the Nevada DMV recently got hacked and was down for awhile? A woman couldn't get her car registration renewed, which expired August 29. Her sticker said AUG 2025. On September 1, she was towed by her own complex for having an "expired sticker", and had to pay $450 to get it out.
This is a common scam in Vegas. They take advantage of the antiquated "abandoned vehicle towing law", which was originally written to allow property owners to tow vehicles abandoned on their property. In order to define "abandoned", the law was stupidly written to include "vehicles with expired registration tags", where that alone makes it permissible to tow.
Shady tow companies in Vegas contacted medium and large apartment complexes, and offered a deal. They'd patrol the lot at night for free, in exchange for being able to tow "abandoned" vehicles, or others which are violating any parking rule. The managers of these complexes typically get a kickback for each towed car. The complex I last lived in Vegas had this going on, but I never had to worry about it because I rented an individual garage, which these tow companies couldn't access.
Had my complex ever done this to me, you have no idea how much of my wrath they would've faced. I would have made life incredibly difficult for them (in a legal way, of course).
