As for the Maslow thing, as BetCheckBet noted, it's not a perfect theory. It's a very general theory of motivation. For example, it helps explain why a homeless person doesn't spend their days seeking meaningful relationships because they're busy trying to fulfill their lower-order basic needs of shelter and hunger. A well-off person who doesn't have many friends spends more time seeking companionship than working towards a promotion at work. That type of thing. Of course, there are many instances in which this theory doesn't hold up like the homeless person who develops relationships and work addicts who put their job ahead of relationships. Anyways, I would argue that the "I can't breathe" thing is more about safety needs than physiological needs. It's not a literal lack of air, it's a constant fear of physical danger. Maslow might argue that constantly feeling vulnerable does not allow people to fulfill the higher order needs of social connection, esteem, and ultimately, self-actualization. Perhaps the destructive behaviours would be construed as a side-effect of a lack of safety needs.
Fun fact: Maslow married his cousin. He was also self-conscious about being very ugly.
