Some people don't realize that the Overlook Hotel was a gigantic set! They did NOT film it in a real hotel!

The exterior of the Overlook Hotel was actually the Timberline Lodge in Oregon:

Note that The Shining was supposed to take place in Colorado.
There is no room 237 in The Timberline, and in fact they requested that room 217 be changed to 237 when its exterior was used, so guests wouldn't be afraid to stay in 217 (an actual room).
I actually would love to stay in room 237 at the Timberline. Too bad it doesn't exist.
Also, the interior of The Timerline does NOT look like the interior of The Overlook, so you'll probably be a bit disappointed if you go there.
Much like the exterior of the actual Cheers bar in Boston looks just like that of the show, but the interior looks nothing like it. For that reason, I refused to pay the cover charge they want from tourists to go in.

As you may know, it wasn't called Cheers until well after the show was off the air. While the show was current, that was the Bull & Finch. They switched the name to Cheers a few years after the finale.Quote:

Even though you can tell it's the same place, the old Timberline (as depicted in The Shining) looks way cooler than the new one (depicted in the more modern picture above).
The new one looks like a Holiday Inn Express.
The old one looks like a cool, older hotel with character, which is why it was picked to be The Overlook.
