Cyberattack knocks Nevada DMV the FUCK OUT
The Nevada DMV has cancelled all appointments and will remain closed until further notice, due to a cyberattack.
The attack caused a "network outage" on August 24.
The website remains operational and in fact Nevada residents are being advised to use that in lieu of the physical DMV, if possible.
It is not clear to me how the website can operate if it's a "network outage", and why continuing to allow it to operate causes any less risk than opening physical offices. In fact, I'd normally expect the opposite, as anything open to the internet is much more vulnerable to attack than in-person facilities.
They have not stated the exact nature of the attack, nor who was likely behind it.
Anything due during the period of closure will not be charged late fees. Nevada DMV typically doesn't accept walk-in appointments anymore, except on Wednesdays and Saturdays. However, due to this attack, anyone with missed appointments will have 14 days to show up as a walk-in on any day, and will be helped.
The exact date of reopening has not yet been established. This is actually pretty big. Imagine your state not having a functional DMV!
