Running pretty damn bad: Woman assaulted by a man in 2014 at school, then sexually assaulted by a woman in 2018 at her teaching job -- and both were mishandled by the schools

She's had a pretty damn bad run of luck, and must wonder what she did to deserve this.

In 2014, she was studying abroad in Poland through a program with Syracuse University. A male student, also from Syracuse University through that program, was very interested in Garbee, and kept following her from bar to bar, attempting to hit on her.

After she repeatedly turned down his advances, he finally freaked out, and punched her in the face, giving her a black eye.

She didn't report it to the police in Krakow, due to the language barrier and fear that a country like Poland wouldn't take such a report seriously.

Instead, she reported it to the school. Rather than immediately investigate and discipline and male student, the school first pressured her just to let it go, and then reluctantly investigated about 2 weeks later. The school found that he was guilty of this assault, but oddly just gave him a slap on the wrist, rather than kick him out of the program and send him home, which they had a legal right to do.

Even more offensive, Syracuse allowed the guy to be a member of the school Honors Program, and even appointed him an ambassador for their Syracuse Abroad program. As a final kick in the ass to Garbee, the student was also admitted to a Master's program at the school, upon graduating.

Syracuse University would not comment on the situation.

Garbee had panic attacks and it took a long time to recover from the trauma of the whole thing.

However, she eventually graduated and became a teacher at an elementary school in the Washington DC area.

The school, called Achievement Prep Academy, is a public charter elementary school. In DC, a public charter school is privately run by charities, but is supported by public funds.

On May 23, 2018, they had some on-campus event called "Muffins for Moms", where female parents of students were invited to campus.

One of the moms had a female guest with her -- apparently a black lesbian on a bunch of drugs at the time. According to Garbee:

The incompetent DC police took a month to locate and arrest the woman who did this, despite the identity of her friend (one of the parents in the class) being well known.

The perpetrator, Andrea Brown, said she was on PCP at the time, and was sentenced to a whopping 30 days in jail and drug treatment. (Imagine if a white man did this to a black female teacher. Do you think he'd have gotten 30 days in jail? They'd throw the book at him!)

So how did the school handle this?

Despite having a surveillance video completely backing Garbee's version of events, the school put her on involuntary unpaid leave for the remainder of the school year, costing her $3300. The school would not explain why they did that, and instead just issued this generic statement:

Apparently the unpaid leave was due to Garbee's claim that she wanted added security before returning to the final weeks of school. The school refused, and thus put her on unpaid leave when she wouldn't show up.

You'd think she'd qualify for some kind of leave after something like this!

If I were Garbee, I would sue the school for anything I could possibly find to hang on them. Awful.

She has since quit teaching and entered law school, where I'm sure some other freak will assault her and the school will cover it up.

Your hypothetical has a couple different dimensions of differences with this case: Race of perp, race of victim, gender of perp, commonness of sexual orientation of perp. Could you provide evidence that any or all of these dimensions result in systemically harsher punishments for the perps by our justice system?

Paid leave? This is America, bub. Unless in a union (or working at Google or Apple), ordinary workers are treated like cattle. And at a charter school, she almost surely wasn’t in a teachers union. So, unless she separately had short term disability insurance that included a mental health matter as a qualifying condition, she was SOOL.

Mumbles, there are all kinds of dumb reasons that public schoolteachers can qualify for paid leave.

Taking time off from PTSD-type symptoms related to being physically attacked and groped by a crazy lesbian WHILE AT WORK should easily qualify for this.

I'm guessing she was denied the $3300 because, rather than frame it as short term disability, she simply refused to come into work until they beefed up security.

But there should have been some cooler head at the school which should have informed her that "I don't want to come to work because I don't feel safe anymore" is harder to qualify for paid leave than "I just got attacked at school and need time off".

Her concerns were actually valid because the woman who attacked her was not yet identified or arrested.

Instead, they just shoved her on unpaid leave and told her to eat shit.

My guess is that some administrator at the school didn't feel like hiring extra security on the fly, and got irritated by her demands, so they just forced the unpaid leave and washed their hands of it.

Not sure if DC public charter teachers are part of any union. If they are, she should raise issue with them (and probably already has). Unions don't tend to do much for employees with little seniority, though, so it wouldn't surprise me if they wouldn't get much involved.

Charter schools usually are not union shops. That’s why the major public achool teachers unions hate that public money gets spent on charter schools. Essentially, a charter achool is a private school that is funded with public money. And while private K-12 schools may be awesome for the students, they tend to shit on the teachers re pay and benefits. But I did read that some charter schools in California and some major cities, such as DC, are unionizing.

This occurred in Alaska, which is a weird place.

For example, "Physical crime with body fluid such as semen isn't considered a sex crime in Alaska", according to article.

SysOp is right. This didn't have to do with race. Just stupid laws in Alaska and a plea deal which was way too lenient.

My point about the race/gender thing in this assault is that, especially in the media, there is a big double standard when it comes to both gender and race.

If a white person victimizes a black person, it is considered much worse than the reverse.

If a man victimizes a woman, it's considered much worse than a woman victimizing a woman, or ESPECIALLY a woman victimizing a man.

Especially in a place like DC, a white man repeating groping a black female schoolteacher while saying disgusting things would have made this story far bigger than a black woman having done it, especially in the media.

I will say that this was more of a function of gender than race, though. While women do suffer some discrimination and disadvantages in American society, they also enjoy certain advantages, and one of those advantages comes to sentencing when it comes to violent or sexual crime. Men get sentenced far more harshly for the same crimes.

Druff, don’t make me google up the data showing that in the US, blacks tends to get sentenced more harshly than whites for the same crime, including much more frequently sentenced to death. You have the skills to search this out. Don’t be willfully ignorant to these facts and claim that blacks get treated better than whites in out justice system. The public is waking up to this reality, and the press is helping that process with more reporting about such an imbalance of justice.

The related issue is that too many whites, yourself included, were kept in the dark about such systemic biases in our justice system that it is quite shocking for many people to realize how advantaged they have been because they are white. But if you disagree, please remind me of the 40+ times you, or any white guy you have heard of, were traffic stopped in the US by police in a two-year span.
