Las Vegas Halloween Casino Chips

Rate this Entry
Halloween is just around the corner, and for some casinos, this means it's time to produce limited edition chips designs specifically for the holiday. While Nevada Gaming no longer authorizes casinos to produce limited edition chips in the $1 denomination, casinos can still produce $5, $25, and $100 chips geared towards the casino chip collecting community. The $1 Halloween chip below was produced by Mahoney's Silver Nugget in North Las Vegas back in 2001 before the law changed.

Their sister property, the Opera House Casino, also in North Las Vegas, produced Halloween chips in a number of denominations that year. In order to increase the numbers that patrons and collectors might take out of the casino, they told a short story across the series. In the series below we see two goblins finding a pumpkin on the $1 chip. They carve a Jack-O-Lantern and a scuffle ensues on the $5 chip until the pumpkin is destroyed on the $25 chip. All ends well on the $100 chip as they share a pumpkin pie presumably baked from the remains. This series also illustrates how the casino greater quantities of the lower denomination chips and fewer of the "rarer" higher denomination chips -- lowering their production from 1,000 to 500 to 50 to 30.

Casinos still produce limited edition Halloween chips. Halloween, along with Christmas and Valentine's Day, are the three most popular holiday chips coveted by collectors. Casinos capitalize on that, sometimes producing multiple Halloween chips in a single year. Some casinos, like Harrah's and the Rio, saved cost on the artwork by using the same design at both properties (see below). Below are some $5 Halloween chips issued by Las Vegas casinos in recent years. These aren't all of the Halloween chips ever issued, just some of the $5 chips from Aliante, Binions, Ellis Island, Fiesta, Four Queens, Hard Rock, Harrah's, MGM Grand, O'Shea's, Palms, Paris, Rio, Riviera, and Tropicana. Most are limited to a production run of only 500 chips, and some, like the two from the Paris shown below, are individually numbered. Casinos in other states also produce limited edition Halloween chips. Look through your stacks the next time you're at the poker tables, or ask the casino cage, and you just might find one of these limited edition chips. Take one of these beauties home and start your own collection. Who knows, it might just be worth something one day.
