I've always been a non believer of most things religion and conspiracies of gods but I always felt the world was corrupt as shit . I never took life serious as a kid due to my home life and ended up in jail on petty shit that turned into probation that turned into prison . I was young , white , 400 miles away from home and didn't know a soul .
I had a lot of problems in prison being who I was. I had to fight and carry the persona of "fight at any moment" to protect myself and get the reputation of someone that wasn't a mark. I got a non violent 3 year sentence in SC which at the time required you to serve half without infractions. I maxed out my sentence almost day for day, the full three years due to fights and they all stemmed from gambling. I can detail those stories some other time not to derail but in those fights, I got in trouble and thrown in the hole where I spent 23 hours a day in 8 x 11 cell , for 18 months.
Lock up in prison is no joke and in SC there were rules that if you didn't cut your hair or shave in the population , they would throw you in the hole until you shaved or cut your hair. The prison I was at, Ridgeland Correctional in Ridgeland SC was a newer facility at the time and has a nice lockup- looking at the SMU - "Special Management Unit " from the air it looks like a big X - Four wings with 20 cells on each wing. Two of the wings were long term lock up where they were housing long terms like me and the Rastafarians that wouldn't cut their hair for indefinite periods of time. Some of these guys had been up there 10-15 years already. There was one guy that was batshit crazy and never came out and never interacted with anyone . He did spazz on the police one time but they got him his shit he wanted and he quieted down immediately. Some of these Rastafarians had life and were never going home and were NEVER going to cut their hair and some were meditating in deep trances to stay sane, having to live out their lives in that cell. I am not kidding. I was 20 years old and was living beside guys that studied every single day of their lives.
They didn't read fucking Tom Clancy, these guys read the Koran and had copies of most all religious books.
On the weekends , it was more relaxed security with no administration being on the property except the correctional officers. We had steel doors and it had a window , like a door within a door that they passed the food tray through. We would open these flaps at night and talk about whats real and not real. We would " Build" , as they called it.
I read a lot of books up there but it was fiction. I took pages from the bible and rolled them up and smoked smuggled tobacco. I didn't hold any credence to their claims that certain races were created first and there was a master plan , yada yada yada. Not everyone on lockup was a rastafarian. There were fools just like me , out of place and needing a safe place to heal from lifes misery and those were the guys I most related to , but I NEVER forgot the things I heard and the conviction with which those words were spoken. I read some of the materials, not even in books, but on photocopies OF books. Some of it was just unfathomable but I also considered how long we have been on this planet and the possibility that through the eons of time it could be possible. One thing that stuck out to me was their symbol which is a lot similar to the Muslim symbol with some variations . I'll post it here.
