There are covers, which are paid for by the latest artist, then there's plagiarism which is basically stealing and now we have sampling, and I'm not sure where that falls as far as the original artist is concerned.
This video goes a ways in explaining some of it and it's not pretty if you're a fan of a particular artist.

The best part: "Lead singer Michael Stipe was not as enthusiastic about recording the song as the other band members were, and as a result bassist Mike Mills debuted on lead vocals with Stipe providing background."

Just came back from a USO concert on Vandenberg Air Force Base....The band was Gary Sinise and The Lt. Dan Band. They play all covers but were amazingly good. They played everything from Journey, The Who, Charlie Daniels, Whitney Houston, George CLinton, etc.....
Shortly before Christmas Sam Smith quietly settled out of court with the Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne over the similarities between 'Stay With Me' and Petty's 1989 hit 'I Won't Back Down'.
Last night it won Smith the Grammy for best song.
