Say goodbye to classic rollercoaster "Colossus" at Six Flags Magic Mountain

How weird that I mention Six Flags Magic Mountain in an unrelated post, and then about an hour later see this unfortunate news story:

    http://hometownstation.com/santa-cla...close-colossus

Colossus is a classic wooden rollercoaster from the late 1970s, and is actually quite fun (even by today's standards), though it lacks the crazy twists and turns you see in the more extreme coasters these days.

No idea why they're closing it. I know it suffers from maintenance problems at times, but that's always been the case. Shortly after it opened in the 1970s, an obese woman flew out of it and died, because the seatbelt didn't lock on her properly. That was when they invented the requirement to disallow people with "unusual body types" from riding rollercoasters.

I kind of want to make it out to Magic Mountain one more time before August 16th to ride it again, though honestly much of the park is now filled with rides that I'm probably too old to handle without getting sick. Colossus never got me sick, though.

I went on Gwazi at Busch Gardens - thing was fucking lethal - never again.

There might be something sentimenatal about these old school coasters, but they're not much fun.

Last wooden coaster I went on was on Boblo Island. The safety bar didn't lock all the way, the thing swayed under the force of the car and i'm glad it's mothballed forever.

Only wooden coaster I've been on was the 1 in Arlington @ Six Flags. Wasn't that thrilling TBH.

BTW, I was on the coaster inside West Edmonton Mall the day before it derailed & killed 3 people.

    Colossus caught fire.

"A fire that erupted Monday on the classic wooden coaster Colossus at Six Flags Magic Mountain consumed the top of the lift hill before it was extinguished. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, which Los Angeles County fire Inspector Scott Miller said was reported at about 1:32 p.m.
Aerial television news footage shows fire crews extinguishing the blaze around 1:50 p.m. as a portion of the structure collapsed, opening a hole in the track."

When I saw they were closing it i was sad. This is the first coaster that I rode. The first time I went on it was the one of the first years that they had turned the cars around backwards. I rode it backwards then forwards. I was hoping to make it back to California next summer so i could ride this again but i guess not

I went on this on August 15, the day before it closed.

Rode it about 5 times right when the park opened, before it crowded up.

Now I'm wondering what the fire might have done to the structure. They might have to wreck all or some of it and start over.

    RIP

Looks interesting, but it's all the way in Sandusky, OH.

I could have gone there if I took the ferry from the Windsor area in May. But I doubt I will be back in the Detroit or northern Ohio areas anytime soon.

That wouldn't be a very good ferry ride lol would take a day or so. If you ever make it to the Harrah's in Cleveland it's a little over an hour drive on the turnpike, trust me well worth the trip

I actually briefly looked into it, and it was about 90 min to Peelee Island and then another 105 minutes to Sandusky. So yeah it would take awhile but not all day.

I agree that Harrah's Cleveland would be a better option for going to Cedar Point. Of course, then I'd be stuck in Cleveland.
