    SkillBet.com anyone played there?

Skillbet.com is a new site open to players in 28 states so far. It sounds alot like that site that went under a couple years ago where you were dealt exact same cards as opponents at other tables and results were compared to determine winner. Supposedly there are differences, however? Anyone played there?

If it's anything like Duplicate Poker (the other site Hutmaster is referring to), it's going to be terrible.

Duplicate Poker was one of the few legal poker sites in the US because there was no element of chance to it. Basically you'd be sat at a table (you couldn't choose), and another table on the system would be dealt the exact same cards as your table. I think a full round would be dealt. The person winning the most chips in his specific seat (compared to the other table) would move on, and the other person would be out. You would then go on to play all of the other winners in the same fashion, until there were only 2 people left, at which point it would end because you can't play heads-up (since that would be real poker), and both people would be awarded a prize set from the start.

At first this sounded like a reasonable (albeit weird) idea, but in practice it was terrible.

    Among the problems:

    1) Since your table was synced with another, you would often have to wait around until the next hand would be dealt (until the other table finished). This could be especially brutal if you are up against slow players on the other table.

    2) It was hard to control your own fate. Your success or failure would be based upon how many chips you'd win compared to the other person at another table with the same cards, but the one thing that WOULDN'T be the same would be the play of others at your respective tables. This would typically dictate more in how many chips you'd win than your own skill. For example, if you got dealt good cards, but all of your opponents were tight and scared, you would have no chance of beating your other-table competition if he's against spewtards.

    3) It was boring. Because of the extreme differences from actual poker, this would get boring and lame really fast.

    Not surprisingly, Duplicate Poker failed.

I saw this thread on google so I created an account to update it.

    (1) The huge problem with Duplicate Poker was that there was collusion. Should be impossible with SkillBet.

    (2) Your right, in Duplicate you hand to wait longer than conventional poker. SkillBet works like Rush Poker or Zoom -- you almost never wait (and certainly less than conventional poker). And, the only time you wait -- you are literally watching your opponent play the hand that you folded -- my favorite part.

    (3) There's a short video explaining it on the home page: www.skillbet.com basically, two people play the same hand against the same opponents -- only factor that causes the result to be different are the players actions.

Unfortunately, it's in private beta now so you can't try it -- but should open up soon....
