A while back a wrote a fairly scathing article regarding an article where Beth Shak hyped herself as a “Professional Poker Player” implying that her Amelda Marcos-esque shoe collection was the fruits of her labors at the poker tables. Well it seems that Shak is once again masquerading as a poker pro (with a side order of Tiffany Michelle doing the same) on a reality TV show, this time on A&E’s New York Ink -Michelle will be appearing on Bravo’s Worst Cooks in America show according to pokernews.com’s Nightly Turbo column.
As I argued in my previous column on the matter Shak is far from a self-sustaining poker pro (notice I said POKER PLAYERS in the title), and even without knowing the specifics of Tiffany Michelle’s contract with UB I can conclude that her winnings of less than $10,000 over the past three years isn’t paying her way in life.
Both Michelle and Shak have run a con-game; not so much on the poker world, but on sponsors and the press. Citing what they are famous for -Shak almost winning a WSOP bracelet and Michelle being the last woman standing in the 2008 WSOP Main Event-both have managed to land some modeling deals, Reality TV appearances, and appearance fees for clubs and salons and such.
But the fact of the matter remains neither of these ladies are Poker Pros! Playing in, and making a deep run, or even winning a poker tournament, does not make you a professional poker player. What these two are doing is analogous to a player who spent one season on an NFL Practice Squad calling himself an NFL player five years down the road, or a basketball player who procured a 10-day contract and never playing a single minute in a game and then referring to himself as a former NBA’er.
In fact, I would argue that both of the above examples are far truer than what Shak and Michelle claim, since they are technically correct. If you want to get an idea of what types of “fearsome” reputations Michelle and Shak have in the poker world, ask any “real” poker pro the following question: Would you rather have Beth Shak or Tiffany Michelle sitting at your table or a complete unknown? My guess is that by an overwhelming margin they are going to choose the so-called Poker Pros!
So how have they turned a single run of good luck into a career away from the tables? Well, first off they are fairly attractive, which never hurts in any endeavor where a camera is involved, and basically any female in a Poker Room will turn a head, so a fairly attractive woman will suddenly think she is Marilyn Monroe after stepping into a Poker Room. So any type of sponsor is quick to snatch-up ANY female player who has even the most modest of poker results.
Michelle was all too aware of this during her 2008 WSOP run where she jumped for joy when she realized she was the last woman standing; knowing this meant TV time and exposure and a potential contract in the sponsorship-happy era.
Secondly, instead of doing the respectable thing and calling themselves poker personalities or hosts– like Tatjiana Pasalic, Lacey Jones, and others-Shak and Michelle seemingly have no issue with carrying on the charade that they make their living at a poker table. While this is intellectually dishonest, they are simply carrying on a narrative that was handed to them -thank you ESPN, UB Poker, and Full Tilt Poker.
So, when you see Shak playing a rigged hand of poker for a free tattoo, or Michelle’s crooked chef’s hat, remember that THIS is how they earn a living, by being quasi-celebrities, not by playing poker.
