OSA, do you feel that wearing expensive cologne gives you an edge in bagging twinks? I can see how investing in your appearance with designer clothes or a nice watch would yield a return. But can people even tell that the cologne you're wearing is quality just by smelling it? I don't think I could guess better than chance whether a woman's perfume is Chanel or something from Wal-Mart. I have been complimented on my scent for wearing cheap aftershave.

I've seen informal studies that suggest tap water from a decent municipality is indiscernible from fancy imported bottled water. French wine snobs have been known to be fooled by swill from California. Vodka, on the other hand, can apparently be appraised accurately by someone with an expert palette (according to Mythbusters, anyway). I'd be curious to see how cheap colognes would be judged against the brands you've listed in a double blind study.

You're arguing against a point that I never made. It's not cologne vs. no cologne. I'm asking about expensive cologne vs. cheap cologne. Can people really smell a difference?

As for pheromones, I was under the impression that those are not standard at all and only used in gimmicky products that loudly boast the ingredient. Is that not the case?

My girl recently got me this for my birthday...





I don't really know all that much about cologne, but I can tell you this stuff is excellent and I've already had two women ask me what I was wearing when I had it on. What I really like about it is that it is not overpowering at all, most colognes give me an instant headache. Not this, very light smell, but very nice.

Last year she gave me Prada and the Kilian blows it away, plus the box it comes in is pretty cool as well.

Got into an argument at Macy's a couple of weeks ago with the mens' fragrance counter help. They were trying to sell me all this stuff I told them I don't like but didn't want to give up on what I had before:

So I asked them if they had my other flavor or any newer variations of:



And again with the we don't carry that here. Tons of Versace and Dolce and Polo. So I told them as long as you don't try to sell me some Drakkar, we'll be ok. With them this was not ok, and defended the hideous stench of open shirts, gold chains and Trans Am's. I laughed at them and walked away.

Ended up at The Gap and spotted a lonesome fragrance languishing, perched between some jeans and some printed shirts left over from '05, from the looks of them. I spotted this and blasted my wrist with it:



Smelled great, and at $30 I wasn't putting it down. So yeah, i'm used to getting the upper end stuff but went with something that normally I wouldn't have even picked up because a couple of people that were more about keeping up appearances than making the sale.
