so, Gawker, which is clearly a for-profit business, is asking its readers to give them money, so they can purchase the video and then show it, which will VERY LIKELY jump up their viewership and ad revenue, which they will not share with the people who paid for it.

For those not following along, Gawker did raise the money but the recording disappeared, as did one of the guys in the video. He showed up dead. Gawker donated the money to addiction charities. The police have since raided the location and those associated with it and in doing so found a device that had the recording on it. It wasn't until the chief of police announced the uncovering of the video that Ford finally admitted smoking crack.
I could care less about him smoking crack occasionally. I don't like people getting killed to try and prevent it from being known though.
