A man long suspected as one of biggest thieves in Dark Net history is finally sitting in jail after trying to launder the millions of dollars he took during a monumental heist, according to Czech media.

The theft happened in the chaos that followed the arrest of Silk Road owner Ross Ulbricht. Thousands of black market customers moved to a relatively new anonymous website for illicit products, called Sheep Marketplace. But within weeks, that site was gone, as was customer’s money. Its owner was suspected of stealing upwards of tens of millions of dollars, as Bitcoin's value skyrocketed in Dec. 2014.

It took only a couple of hours before the Internet identified a suspect: Thomas Jiřikovský. In a flurry, his Facebook page and real life address were exposed to the world. Jiřikovský denied being involved immediately.

But now, Jiřikovský is behind bars after attempting to buy a luxury home in Lusatia, a region in the Czech Republic, under his grandfather’s name.

Police described his funds to make the purchase as the “proceeds of crime.” Unable to credibly explain the origin of the millions of dollars he used to buy the villa, the police made the connection between Sheep Marketplace and Jiřikovský quickly. Czech financial police launched an investigation into Jiřikovský's money and found that house had been paid for entirely in Bitcoins.

Police are not divulging the full details of their findings as yet.

As Jiřikovský sits in jail, many are wondering if the same fate awaits other Dark Net thieves. Just two weeks ago, millions of dollars were stolen from Evolution, one of the largest online black markets to date.

There's reason to be skeptical, however. Jiřikovský's name was outed within hours of the fall of Sheep Marketplace. No such event has taken place since Evolution's closing.

Additionally, Evolution was founded and run by professional credit card frauds who have made a living for years laundering money. They're likely much more adept at surreptitiously moving stolen cash.

Still, Jiřikovský's arrest shows that laundering millions in Bitcoins is not easy. Stealing Bitcoins on the Dark Net isn't much of a challenge. Turning the digital currency into real world cash, though, is an entirely different question.

These guys from evolution better have a good plastic surgeon at the ready. I would imagine the mid to small dealers get hurt the worst, because they have to pay the big boys regardless. But with that amount taken there will plenty looking for them for a number of reasons.
Still a blip on the radar and that's only for those using Bitcoins as a commodity.

seriously anyone wondering how 'anonymous' bitcoins really are should look no further than the FBI agents who specialized in digital electronic crime who just got pegged for btc theft.

It's remarkable how the only crooked FBI agents turned up here.

English law during the 18th century had it right. Private police force. It all went wrong when law enforcement became paid for by the public.

yeah but youre making it public. that means gg career, realistically, so i need to offset the long term equity loss by targeting a figure with reasonable yearly interest returns, as in enough to live off of comfortably while putting at least half back into the original investment pool

Yeah those daily drug cartel bitcoin raids are taking up so much bandwidth. It's spy versus spy and the good guys are usually one step(no pun intended) ahead.

Speaking of which, all that is needed is the beheading of one of these cyber geek thieves on YouTube and things will get back to normal

    Power to the pusher.

Trezor is a fancy new "bitcoin safe".

And some dude just smashed its security using a $70 oscilloscope.

When I first saw one of these, before I fully understood what it was, I thought it was something that looked really cool by 1960s standards but very dated by the mid-late 80s when I was seeing it:

The first video game ever was created on an oscillioscope, in 1958.

Dual trace oscopes like this weren't dated by the '80's. They were standard test equipment and looked much like this until 2000 something as they went to flat screen.

This is one instance where the old Cathode Ray Tube display had advantages over digital flat screens. The glow that would "persist" from random spikes or whatever could be revealing on the CRT. For basic uses I never sensed a huge rush to transition unless you were a field tech and needed portability.

I was never very good and I remember always having trouble "sync'ing" the scope before taking measurements.

Very cool hack using oscope to snoop bit train.

Every time I see a post to this thread I am hopeful to see the collapse. Such a tease.

Bitcoins are sliding so fast and hard that criminals are now converting them to other forms of currency as soon as they get them:

The falling value of Bitcoin is leading many ransomware makers to convert BTC ransom payments into other forms of currency as soon as they are able.

According to Etay Maor, senior fraud prevention strategist at IBM Security, this trend is evident in underground computer criminal forums.

“They use Bitcoin for the money laundering part and take payment with it, but they’ll move it out almost immediately,” Maor told The Register.

“Most of them won’t keep Bitcoins – they don’t like the valuations Bitcoin has – so they just use it as a layer of obfuscation, and move it to a different form of money.”
Maor is one of the speakers at RSA Conference 2015. On Wednesday, April 22nd, he presented his talk, “Major Cyberfraud Innovations in the Last Twelve Months,” which examined how computer criminals have adopted more sophisticated tactics in the past year.

The BTC value first peaked back on December 4, 2013 at USD 1,147.25, according to CoinDesk. That price has steadily declined over the past two years.

Bitcoins are worth USD 231.38 as of this writing.

Despite the instability of their value, the apparent anonymity of Bitcoin transactions has in part facilitated the growth of the ransomware market. Ransomware is now distributed to most English-speaking regions around the world, with computer criminals increasingly turning their attention to the Far East, including South Korea, Japan, and Malaysia.

Ransomware makers are also embracing new targets, including entire web databases of financial organizations, video game files, and school computer systems.

Even so, security professionals are pushing back against the expanding ransomware market.

Just this month, Kaspersky Lab released decrypting tools for two different strains of ransomware—CoinVault and Scraper—that allow users to regain access to their files.

Victims of ransomware should never pay the ransom payment as they have no guarantee that doing so will lead to the decryption of their data.
