    Got semi rolled on ebay

I bought a 2500 Macbook on ebay for a friend in Europe. Basically I am going there next month and told him I would do him a favor and bring this with me when I go. Apparently Macs are a lot more expensive in EU than in the USA. Of course a day after I buy the item the seller gets like 2 bad reviews in one day. In addition, I see the item I just bought auto relisted. It appears he built up his account and then decided to go all out and snag as much money as possible.

It is an obvious scam to anyone that looks at it. So I call Ebay and get some Indian fuck on the phone who doesnt speak English and can barely understand him. He says not to worry that all i need to do is file a claim on the 23rd and I will be protected by the ebay protection shit.

I dont trust what the Indian is telling nor do I trust any kind of protection shit. Also, it is so fucking obvious this is a scam that ebay should shut the guy down and insta freeze his account. So I call paypal and get a real person on the phone. This person insta freezes their account and tells me I need to file a claim on the 18th if the sender doesnt send me the item or doesnt respond to the claim she just filed.

It got me thinking... What I am worried about is the fucking scammer sends me some pos computer that is the same weight and size as what I ordered. He then provides the tracking number to paypal to get his account unfrozen claiming he sent it to me. Once I accept the package is it basically becomes his word again mine?

This shit does happen. They usually believe the buyer especially if there are other claims. Take a video of the package from all sides and video yourself opening it.

The scammers are working on the basis that 50% of buyers would have no fucking clue how to lodge a claim for chargeback.

This time round they got unlucky, but its just a numbers game. Someone somewhere will get rolled.

Even if they get caught they probably won't get anything like the punishment they deserve. It's a freeroll.

eBay/PayPal is a scammer's paradise, but it mostly favors buyers. Sellers can try to freeroll you in the way you described, but when it comes to disputes, they side with buyers an absurd percentage of the time.

This is good because you'll most likely win your dispute and not get ripped off. This is bad because it's trivially easy to do chargebacks and get free shit.

If you're still looking I may be willing to part with my Macbook pro for the right price. It's 1 year old, 13" non-retina screen, I think 4gb of RAM but I have an upgrade to 8 I've just been too lazy to put in. Think I paid 1450 for it new.

It's not worth it. I paid 1500 for mine and that was way too much in hindsight. I can build a decent desktop computer for less than 800 with HD monitor, so there's no reason to pay that much for a laptop. That's why I'm strongly considering getting rid of mine, and I'll just go buy an ultrabook for 800 with what I get.

I had something similar happen recently. Sold an Amazon gift code on ebay and the buyer bought it, loaded it to Amazon and then disputed it with PayPal within an hour saying they didn't authorize the transaction and someone had used there account to buy it or something. Clearly not what happened, they bought the code loaded it to Amazon, then acted like there paypal had been used by "her son" or someone without knowledge.

This wasn't near 2500, only 100 but PayPal was great. They actually asked my side of it, I called the 1-800 number gave them my side, and they warned me about this happening when selling non-tanglible items and without a tracking #, but actually credited my account for the full amount within 24 hours.

Pretty sure the scammer got a free $100 on Amazon obv. while PayPal reimbursed me the full amount. Very happy that paypal made good on it, but realize this scam is way too easy.
