There is an art to getting the best "regular" room location at a hotel, in order to suit your needs. Here is a handy guide on what to ask for:
COMMON TO ALL HOTELS
Close to Evelvator
- PRO: Easy to get from room to lobby, and vice-versa.
- CON: Noisy, which can especially be bothersome early morning or late at night when trying to sleep.
Room Has Connecting Door
- PRO: If you have both rooms, it can function like a suite. Otherwise, there is no "pro" to this. Avoid.
- CON: Noisy. These are not soundproofed the same way the walls are.
Handicapped Room
- PRO: Can be a little bit larger.
- CON: Bathroom is weird, shower can get everything wet, many things are too low.
Pet Stay Room
- PRO: None. Even if you have a pet, you don't want this unless forced.
- CON: Remnants and smells of animal piss, shit, and fur eveyrwhere.
Smoking Room
- PRO: You won't get charged if you smoke in there and get caught.
- CON: Smells bad. Avoid.
SPECIFIC TO LARGE, HIGH RISE HOTELS
High Floor
- PRO: Better views, less noise from below.
- CON: Longer elevator rides, difficult evacuation during emergencies
Pool View
- PRO: You get to ogle hot chicks at the pool like a pervert, and nobody can see you doing it.
- CON: Can be noisy during the day, especially if they play music or hold events there.
SPECIFIC TO LOW RISE HOTELS
High Floor
- PRO: Less noise from below.
- CON: Slow elevator rides. Can be difficult to take luggage to room if no elevator.
First Floor
- PRO: No elevator/stairs ever necessary. Easy to get in and out. Easy evacuation during emergency.
- CON: More prone to break-ins. Sometimes very noisy.
Facing Street
- PRO: Sometimes has the best view.
- CON: Noisy.
Facing Parking Lot
- PRO: Often the quietest way to face.
- CON: Usually no view, can be a little noisy in morning when people check out.
In general, if you're looking for a quiet room in a large hotel, you want to ask for a high floor, facing away from the pool (if open) or noisy street, away from the elevator, with no connecting door. If you're looking for a quiet room in a small hotel, you want the highest floor possible, facing the quietest side, away from the elevator, and with no connecting door.
You can get this held for you if you call around 1pm on the day of check-in. Do not accept bullshit answers that it's assigned at check-in, because then you'll get fucked. They can always hold rooms for you.
