So I recently saw a news headline that Navient had been sued by a group of states (including mine, CA) for predatory loan practices and was ordered to forgive some loans. For about one second I got excited that I would qualify for this and get some or all of the $30K I still owe them forgiven (after paying off my loans dutifully for the last 15 years or so, including through the entire pandemic as Navient is technically a private company so I didn't get the debt repayment relief).
But then I realized that like most of these type of settlements there was probably some catch, and lo and behold if you read the fine print you only qualify if you went to a for profit school (like Devry or ITT) AND had already had loan forbearances. Those of us who just had Fannie Mae student loans that got bought up and have been dutifully paying them don't quality for jack shit.
So yeah, some DAs get some good press for allegedly tackling a predatory student loan company, a tiny minority of people get some token benefit, without anything changing for the vast majority of us. Same as it ever was.
