I got stung by a scorpion tonight

Bent down on the stairs to pick up what I thought was a piece of fluff to throw it away and got zapped on the finger. First time ever in 13 years in Arizona. Googling it got me worried because it resembled the Arizona Bark Scorpion and I kept finding things that said it was highly dangerous (not like a standard scorpion). Went to the ER just to be safe and the doc said I'm fine. Tingling and numbness will pass in about 24 hours or less. I screamed like a baby when it happened.

Yeah the FIRST thing my dad wanted to be clear on when I stayed with him in Chandler was to watch the fuck out for scorpions and black widows, specially at night.

So of course I manned the blacklight and went hunting each and every single night and never caught a damn thing.

The scorpion that stung you, was it very thin? Like could fit underneath a door frame thin?

Try and be more careful obv.

It was small and like a pale orangey yellow in color. Little bastard. I'm tingly and numb all the way to my elbow. Scared me and Jess but good. Lot of bugs at the new house - probably all the foliage outside. I'll be more careful for ever more.

Did you move again? Also I recall there being a spray for black widows, not sure about scorpions. Have you looked into that sort of thing?

The only move has been the one I posted about previously - second house in 8 years... This new place is in a gated community that is replete with myriad wooded walking paths, bushes, trees, and grass. I've seen a shit ton of bugs in the foliage while walking the dogs and had my first ever experience with a huge flying roach here. So obv scorpions are not a huge surprise, but still a total shocker to find him on the carpeted stairs inside the house.

No idea about a spray but I have two puppies and two kitties who have their noses to the floor 24-7, so would not opt for a poisonous spray to kill bugs. Would def be open to a natural remedy that wouldnt hurt the critters but no idea what that would be.... I know diatomaceous earth kills ants, but it's also dangerous to the animals and humans if they breathe in the dust.

It's very pretty but the houses are way too close together - def not a permanent landing place. Just a for now kind of solution. The puppies love it.

Get a room you two love birds.

LOL @ Mike hunting scorpions and black widows.

Mike, I have at least two black widows I know of hanging outside on my porch. Every summer I have them out there, I just leave them be. I can take a pic for you if you want. I'll even let you name them.

And sorry Vwls, but the thought of you screaming like a banshee when you got stung is pretty damn funny.

Angel, did you feel like dancing?

I've heard it said that is a side effect of a scorpion sting (or at least your feet shake/quiver).

and btw, what happened to the scorpion?

I did run around and dash up and down the stairs a few times. I was kind of freaking out. Did not shake or quiver - muscle spasms are one thing that can happen if you are having a very severe reaction... along with fever, sweating, nystagmus (eyes flicking back and forth), swollen tongue, etc. Thankfully I didn't get any of those symptoms. Also, it's interesting that the numbness that occurs after the venom sets its course actually kills the pain. But that pins and needles feeling is weird as hell.

As for the fate of the scorpion, I eventually ran and got a shoe, came back and smacked him as hard as I could till he was dead. I then killed him a second time by spraying him with insecticide. I may have killed him a third time with the shoe again after that - not sure. I was really freaked out and the pain was excruciating at that point. Makes your head swim. Once he was dead, I got an empty jar from the kitchen and a piece of cardboard, and flicked his corpse into the jar, then ran outside and threw the whole jar over the back wall. Stupid - should have kept the body to show the doctor so he could identify the variety of venom. But I just wasn't thinking straight. I was crying a little and scared he maybe wasn't dead as I flicked him into the jar. LOL. Total pussy. I did laugh at myself for freaking out so hard.

He didn't look at all like the scorpion in the picture above, with the idiot putting him in his mouth. He looked more like this:

You should try flicking the bean with the numb finger. It should feel like someone else. Report back in your best sonatine impersonation.

I worked for a very high end wood company. The yard boss caught a scorpion on some African Wood. He kept the scorpion in a coffee can to try and figure out how long they wood live. The scorpion did not die with over 30 days with no food or water.
