I don’t know why they named them manhole covers, but if you’ve ever lifted one, there is maybe .001% of the female population that *might* be able to lift one back in the day when they did them manually with a bar. Most of those things back in the day were close to 200lbs. It very well have been named manhole covers because it wasn’t a job for boys or weak men. I don’t know the etymology of the word, but they’ve been called man hole covers long before any woman burned a bra or had any desire to get a job working for some road crew.
