When I first met Annette in person, it was 2007 at the UB Aruba event. Despite being a big thing on the internet and having a million poker fanboys, she was shy, softspoken, and seemed very nice. It also seemed she was very self conscious about her weight and appearance, yet she also didn't seem concerned with looking her best (she wore no makeup, unflattering clothes, etc.)

Anyway, I walked away thinking highly of her. Here was a nice, softspoken girl who just happened to be really good at poker, and put all of her focus into it.

Years later, the pictures emerged of her looking very skinny, wearing fashionable clothes, and a ton of makeup. Almost looked like a different person.

At first, I thought, "Good for her." Poker probably gave her the self-confidence to embark on a quest for self-improvement, and she clearly put in a lot of effort to lose weight, dress well, and look good, thus likely increasing her confidence at the same time, so it appeared.

But then she went through a long slump in the game, which I realize is a real thing in tournament poker, but it did coincide with the looks change. I thought that perhaps she let focus on her game take a back seat to trying to become a hot chick, and maybe her poker ability suffered for it. I still thought good things about her, but did believe there was something to my theory. I had remembered the story involving a local LA sports talk host, who was known for his fiery attitude and angry demeanor which actually endeared fans to him. He was also morbidly obese. When he got gastric bypass surgery and lost like 400 pounds, he came back to the radio and wasn't himself. The anger and fire were gone. He was a different guy. Perhaps mentally and physically healthier, but no longer good for the radio. I wondered if Annette had something similar going on.

When Annette took the Lock Poker sponsorship, I didn't think much of it, until Lock had its infamous payment problems. People tried to ask Annette to stop repping them, but she didn't care. She knew they were cheating everyone. She knew it for well over a year, yet promoted them to the bitter end. It was clear to me that she was busto and needed the money. That really changed my opinion of her.
