HoodedN - please reply with some Foxwoods stories

First, please take a moment to appreciate I spelled your name correctly.

Second, congrats on the SpringClassic win. You are kind of a sleeper on this board though I have been alert to your Foxwoods references for some time. I got my eye on you.

Been a long time since I’ve been to Foxwoods. Once the largest poker room in the US. Maybe it still is. Everyone from Vanessa Selbst to guys collecting unemployment. If you couldn’t find a good game you shouldn’t play.

Please regale us with some tales or a review of the joint currently. Anything. Is it dying?

Is it still true that the $2.1 billion Wynn Boston is going to have 90 tables to compete with Foxwoods 94? How do you see that playing out. Do you foresee a major shift in action? Will Foxwoods convert their room to a movie theater.

I saw Foxwoods on the ropes in 2008. They gotta be shitting themselves.

You must be poised to put a hurtin on the first wave of casual Boston Financial District money. This feels like a monumental opportunity for you. Like once in a lifetime stuff.

Imagine a poker room on the corner of Broad & Wall streets. This will have to do for now.

So, I am calling you out. Start writing.

There is something that has to be said about the unique location - at least for the East Coast

Take Foxwoods. It’s in the middle of fucking nowhere. The first of your typical Indian casinos in a woebegotten area.

Foxwoods requires a commitment to gamble from its patrons. The Wynn will be different. Get out of work, grab some dinner in the North End and Uber to the casino to cap off the night. Impulse, gambling. Early, there will be a lot of impulse curiousity. See what $2 billion buys you. Before you know it someone has punted off a couple of racks to HoodedN.

You aren’t trekking to some dive in the middle of nowhere. You aren’t kicking yourself that you left your gun at home if you’re in Detroit.

The people who live and work in Boston have money. It’s expensive to live there. Visiting or working there is expensive.

There is a statistic that a very high percentage of people who live in Massachusetts have never been to Boston. It’s tough to get to. It’s expensive to park. The land of one way streets is difficult to navigate. It’s imposing to casuals.

    Ok I'll bite.

Foxwoods has been like a second home to me for a little while now. I'm not there as often as I have been in the past but still make 4-5 trips/month on average. I have had some great times there as well as some not so great, mostly due to a little degen streak in the pits. Weekend nights in the summer were always my favorite, taking 4:20am breaks in J lot directly adjacent to the poker room with numerous other poker players, we had our own little social circle and it was great times.

Foxwoods recently changed the back doors to J lot to exit only, according to a floorman it was thanks to "that asshole shooting up Vegas", and it seems this decision is directly correlated with the path the casino is on. We were just there this past friday night, Memorial Day weekend and it was more dead than the regulated online sites. Walking thru the main corridor from the poker room to the food court at 2am and we were two of maybe 10 people in the area. Anyone who knows the place well knows how absurd of a site this would have been.

They have made a ton of changes to their rewards system for the worse over the last couple years. I won't even go into it but it has for sure driven away customers. The poker room itself does ok on weekends and during tournament series, but it is far from the days where you could walk thru on a friday night and 80-90% of the 94 tables were full. I turned 21 during the mid to late stages of the poker boom so I was there in the heyday. The sea of people you could find in that room was a site unmatched by anything else I've seen in a poker room.

I think Foxwoods can sense their impending doom when the Encore Boston Harbor (aka Wynn Boston) opens in about a years' time. I am for sure excited about it, and I have no doubt the games will be amazing. I am not however looking forward to traveling there as it will take me right through the heart of the city. That's one thing they will never have over Foxwoods, being in the middle of nowhere it is an easy 45 min trip south on 95 for me.

Maybe I'll think of more and edit it in. I think this is my longest post ever on PFA but I did it for you San.

The major draw for Wynn (or whatever the fuck it becomes) will be Euro money. Boston is a close flight from Europe, its relatively safe here with things to do, and this area is full of money and games will be aplenty. Lots of young people of Japanese/Chinese/Middle Eastern elites go to school here too, and they will also be a common demo. These folks don't go to Foxwoods because...its in the middle of fucking nowhere Connecticut. And the casino is barely meh. The new Boston place will change that since one doesn't need to pay a casino hotel rate to stay here, and there are plenty options to get around quickly like MBTA and ride share.

Add in the degen locals, and it's a pretty interesting case for the Boston poker room to be a new hub of action for many of the game's best players.

    I overlook the university money.

The stupid filthy rich Chinese/Middle Eastern kids and their abandoned Mercedes/Maserati’s in the parking garages around town. They realize they don’t need them and just pay $500/mo to warehouse and they simply just don’t care.

Foxwoods is gonna get croaked it looks like.

Those first few months are gonna be epic.

I already have these folks in some of my home games in the city

The first time I ever saw an AmEx black card was was in 1999 working at a GameStop in the Pru when a teen and two other Middle Eastern kids came in looking at Pokemon stuff (back then, it was huge: different color GameBoys, playing card packs, etc). Then, two huge bodyguards come in, followed by some Sheikh who I think said he was from Qatar. Asked me about Pokemon GameBoys ($49.99) and all the different options. "Well, there's the Green, the Red, Yellow ($24.99 per each)....all of them have different Pokemon you can catch and...", he stops me. "You know what, let's make it easy. 4 of each, please!". Then he asked me about the cards. "I have 12 packs on the counter, $9.99 a piece"...."any more?"......."around 240 more in the back in 3 boxes."

"Let's take those too!" I literally had to get a dolly to wheel out all the Pokemon shit to this guy's Lincoln Continental outside.

There's paper, and then there is PAPER. I think Boston will be one of those venues, especially if they keep a robust comp system.

True. People don’t realize how much money there is in the city. Rents are comparable to NYC and there are more doctors in Boston than Red Sox fans. Can’t wait for this place to open

what do you want to know? Place has been a ghost town for years, 85% of the clientele are pissed off octogenarians and the other 15% are just pissed off. Unless its Friday or Sat night nearly impossible to find a spewy fish at the poker tables (unless Im there), the only reason anyone goes is cause they throw free rooms at you. I take their rooms and drive 15 mins up the road to Mohegan where the food is good and people are actually having fun then crash at the woods or sometimes play their shitty tournies. They have been running a weekly high hand promotion which is pretty sweet, last time I was there I flopped quad Aces and won an extra $500 for high hand in the room resets every 30 mins. MGM Springfield is set to open in August, 25 mins from me as opposed to an hour and 40 bye bye Foxwoods
