NASA Press Conference 1pm EST today (major discovery)

"Discovery beyond our solar system" is all we're getting for now. But most news outlets reporting that it probably has something to do with an exoplanet discovery.

They discover these planets on a daily basis, even habitable zone ones. So interested to hear why this one so special. (presuming it is planet related)

Anything they discover these days is so far off and probably always has been that they are now experts on wobbles of light, gathered by super networked computer-scope thingys. You don't think Trump is looking over their budget just in case Mexico defaults?

At the moment it's all wobbles and blinks. But that seems to be enough for these nerds to deliver us some super interesting science.

The fact that NASA's budget has always been the burden of the US taxpayer actually bothers me.... IMO NASA should be scrapped and a new agency set up so ALL countries can contribute financially. We all share the same goals when it comes to space anyway.

That way the budget could potentially increase 10 fold and progress could be greatly speeded up.

The US military would hate it of course. But the money saved on the NASA budget could be injected into a new military space agency.

It's a sweet gig if you can get it but it's looking like the Universe is winning the space race.
For all the good it brings it comes at a cost and Trump might not be a science guy. These short sleeved collar types are basically on the dole and some I hear are not even white.

So they found 3 exoplanets all orbiting the same star and all in the habitable zone...

It's 39 light years away and planets are roughly the same size as earth.... Doesn't mean they're earth like planets. Could easily be Venus and Mars like.

Those nerds are very excited about this. But they pretty much admit that they know little else until more advanced technology is developed. Although James Webb telescope should tell us a bit more in 2019.

It's still awesome. It's only a matter of time until life is found somewhere other than the earth. Any life, even fossil life, would be the most important discovery ever.

Life capable of communicating across the vast distances between stars, let alone actually traveling between them, I'm less optimistic about.

right because we really want international oversight on the people in charge of putting our spy satellites into orbit.

It most definitely is still awesome. But can't agree that finding any form of life, or past life in the way of a fossil, would be the most important discovery ever.

The scientists tell us it will be the most important. But they're just on message imo. We are way beyond that. The discoveries made already tell us life HAS to be out there. Even in our own solar system I'd wager that very simple life is in abundance.

Of course the real game changer would be discovering intelligent life. This could definitely happen within our life time with the advancement of telescopes... I'm convinced one day a telescope will be able to filter out all the crap and detect stuff on a planet that could only be artificially made.

Though communicating is never happening obv.

You missed the bit were I said a separate US military agency would be needed first.

I clearly said that. You clearly ignored that.

    Just fantasy after all.
