British actor John Hurt well known for his parts in Harry Potter as well as V for Vendetta and in 1984 died today at the age of 77. His last movie which I thought was very good was starring in the spy thriller Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy which was loosely based on some real issues MI6 had back in the 80s.

1984 is the most hideously depressing movie I have tried to sit through in my life. Maybe the point of the movie, but they really overdid it.

To be clear yeah JLC riffed on the loss of innocence of British intelligence, and sure that happened with Philby et all, but mostly its just an exquisite romp of a spy book that was served remarkably well by Sir Alec Guiness et all for the BBC miniseries.
