Fairbanks, Alaska to be below -50 degrees tonight

-42 right now at 5pm there, forecasted to fall to -53 by 11pm.

This will be one of the coldest temperatures they've had in a long time, and I believe the coldest of the 2010s.

If you dump a bucket of boiling water out the window of a tall building, it will be ice by the time it hits the ground.

Would love to experience extreme cold weather like that some day.

And no need for tall buildings at those temperatures. Toss a mug of boiling water in the air and it lands as ice.

Back in the academic day, I interviewed for a tenure-track position at U of Alaska-Fairbanks. I'm super glad I had another option!

Lived near Fairbanks when I was 3, my older siblings liked the summers because it never got dark but the winter not so much...they say if it was below -10 degrees they didn't get to go outside for recess

I experienced 16 below, air temp, not wind chill, in Bimidji MN in the middle of the day. It's nuts. Any exposed skin immediately starts to hurt. I can't even imagine -50.
