WP Obama. Keeping someone who exposed war crimes from within should be honoured, not jailed.

Disagree on Snowden. Him next plz.

As for Assange, no necessary action needed. Trump will hire him in some special advisory role before the month is out.

Snowden's never, ever catching a pardon.

You may well be right about Trump & Assange, given how well it would work out for Russia.

Assange vowed that he would agree to be extradited to the U.S. if Manning was pardoned. While Manning only had his sentence commuted, id say close enough. Let’s see if Assange actually follows through...

Yes, Snowden has never been arraigned in a court, and therefore cannot be pardoned.

    HOWEVER

the DOJ could drop the charges, which would essentially be the same thing. Sure, the new DOJ can maybe refile the charges as it wouldn't count as double jeopardy, as he's never been to trial on this matter and been found innocent.

    So yeah....

I support a Snowden pardon or whatever. Pretty unlikely tho, you have to be a Clinton or in AIPAC to get away with that shit.

actually the tweet from wikileaks says that assange will agree to be extradited if manning is given "clemency" (i.e. mercy), which should include commutation of manning's sentence.

assange is going to look like a massive douchebag if he backs out of this now

realtalk though, trump loves assange so there won't be any prosecution and assange will end up as trump's press secretary.

there is a lot of concern that somehow trump will invalidate this commutation, is that legally possible?

i can't see how since that would be like reversing a pardon, which isn't possible

what a relief...a drunk has-been 50 year old ex pat who voted for Donald Trump via absentee ballot from mexico is chiming in to give me his expert opinion, on my expert opinion of federal law.

not really an expert opinion though, as my information could've been gathered from an 8th grade civics class text book. Yours however.....

oh....and that 90k in winnings you have....where'd that go?

    not even remotely fucking possible.

commutation is the same as saying "you've served your time" and that's it. it's not contingent on anything like "i'll commute this sentence but if the next guy doesn't like it....well"

JFC, did anyone pass the fucking 8th grade?

Then, how did Gerald Ford pardon Richard Nixon? He was never arraigned in court. Merely investigated.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, the target of one of the largest national security investigations in U.S. history, agreed on Thursday to hand himself over to authorities. There’s only one catch.

In exchange for his surrender, Assange is asking President Barack Obama to grant clemency to Chelsea Manning, a former U.S. Army private convicted in 2013 of leaking sensitive government files to WikiLeaks. Under the U.S. Constitution, Obama has the authority to pardon or commute the sentences of prisoners convicted of federal crimes.

Manning, a transgender woman, is currently serving out the remainder of a 35-year prison sentence at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks in Leavenworth, Kansas. She suffers from gender dysphoria (as diagnosed by military doctors) and in July attempted to end her own life, later citing a lack of appropriate treatment as the cause. The military agreed this week to allow Manning to undergo sex reassignment surgery drawing an end to a hunger strike initiated by the prisoner five days before.

While there’s no indication the Obama administration would consider Assange’s offer—the White House did not respond to a request for comment—the president has the ability to commute Manning’s sentence and set her free. (In contrast, a “pardon” is applied in the case of a former prisoner who has already completed their sentence.) According to the Office of the Pardon Attorney, Obama has granted 575 commutations during his presidency, more than the last nine presidents combined, while denying nearly 9,000 commutation requests.
