The Poker Vlog Wars of 2017

Poker vlogs have been mentioned a few times in recent episodes of the radio show. Specifically, in the 12-07-16 episode, Druff and khalwat discussed a recent controversy involving vloggers being told to stop filming live hands at the poker table. Notably, a vlogger named TheTrooper97 was brought up as he is one of the most well known poker vloggers. Druff didn't know much about him (by the way Druff, it's pronounced exactly like "blog" with a "v" replacing the "b" - one syllable, not "vee-log"), and it didn't sound like khalwat thought much of him.

I've been fascinated with the idea of people moving to Vegas to play poker professionally. Not as a goal, but as some kind of perverse punishment. I enjoy playing low stakes live poker a few times a year (mostly on vacation), but I can't begin to imagine doing it full time. Yet I come across locals every trip to Vegas who seem to be doing just that - somehow grinding out an existence playing $1/$2 full time in Vegas. Whenever my buddy and I go to Vegas, I ask him how much he would have to be paid to quit his job and move to Vegas to play $1/$2 live NLH full time. Each visit, that figure keeps getting bigger. I don't know how people do it.

The aforementioned Trooper has actually documented what this lifestyle looks like in his vlog which I came across a couple of years ago on YouTube. I watched his videos occasionally and subsequently followed a thread (since closed) about him on 2+2. Then last year I was in Vegas on a brief trip and was playing a $1/$2 game at the Bellagio and he happened to sit down at my table. We chatted for a bit about his vlog and I generally found him to be a nice guy. At the time he maybe had a couple thousand subscribers on YouTube and now has over 20,000.

In the past two months or so, YouTube has exploded with new poker vlogs. Trooper had the market cornered for nearly 4 years and now there are dozens of poker vlogs with more "My Poker Vlog Pilot" videos showing up on YouTube every day. Suddenly it's become fashionable to start your own live poker vlog. A handful of these are interesting. Most of them are awful. A lot of them are discussed in another thread on 2+2 which was opened after the original Trooper thread was closed. It's an amazing dumpster fire of trolls versus vlog supporters. In fact, the original Trooper thread had to be closed because there was so much trolling of Trooper.

Here's my honest assement of a few of the Las Vegas Poker vlogs (I haven't really waded into the non-Vegas vlogs).

    TheTrooper97 vlog

    Link to his channel.

    Sample video:

Brief description: The Trooper is a $1/$2 Las Vegas grinder who drinks a lot of Starbucks.

Pros: The Trooper is considered the OG of poker vlogging. He's done it the longest and is somewhat of an innovator in that respect. He's the most prolific vlogger too. He puts out a new video almost every day. Many call him lazy but shooting, editing, and uploading a video every single day must be an insane amount of work. He has also developed pretty good editing skills. He reports the results of every single session he plays. It's a very frank look at the bleak reality of trying to make it as an average full time low stakes grinder in Vegas.

Cons: With daily content comes inevitable repetitiveness. He seems to do the same thing in every episode - sleep in, go get coffee, complain about something, maybe sit in a $1/$2 game, walk around the Strip for a while and eat unhealthy food, finish the poker session, rinse-and-repeat. He doesn't seem to be making any progress in poker as he hasn't really moved beyond the $1/$2 level. His vlog persona is one of a faux angry tough guy which is off-putting to many. He lives in a nice apartment but doesn't have any furniture and just throws his clothes on the floor. He can be very frustrating to watch.

    Andrew Neeme

    Link to his channel.

    Sample video:

Brief description: Las Vegas pro who very quickly usurped TheTrooper as the best poker vlogger.

Pros: Neeme only started his vlog 3 months ago and he already has 10,000 more subscribers than Trooper. Viewers immediately declared him the better vlogger. He popularized the style of filming his live hands during sessions and providing voice-over analysis in post-production (Trooper would merely film a hand or two during a session and didn't commentate). He plays higher stakes (up to $10/$20 I believe) which makes it more interesting. His editing skills are great. He also has a likable personality on camera.

Cons: The biggest con is that he doesn't put out more frequent content.

    Pokerkraut

    Link to his channel.

    Sample video:

Brief description: German low-stakes grinder in Las Vegas who has been vlogging since about May 2016.

Pros: Pokerkraut's best asset is that he can be fairly funny. He used to deal poker with Trooper at the Linq for about a year before the room closed. They are friends and have a weight-loss challenge going for 2017.

Cons: His editing could be better. Terrible background music selection. Infrequent content.

    Tappan M

    Link to his channel.

    Sample video:

Brief description: Low-stakes Las Vegas pro (maybe?).

    Pros: Dry wit.

Cons: Maybe his wit is a bit too dry. He doesn't post often.

    Brad Owen

    Link to his channel.

    Sample video:

Brief description: Las Vegas pro who plays a wide range of stakes.

Pros: Mixes up his content a lot. Includes humorous little gags in his videos. Seems like a good dude.

Cons: Some of the humor is a bit forced.

    Advantage Player

    Link to his channel.

    Sample video:

Brief description: Professional poker player and blackjack counter. Seems to be based in the Bay Area but has included some Vegas content.

Pros: Includes videos on life as blackjack pro which could be interesting to some.

Cons: Probably the most punchable face in poker vlogging. He comes off as a smarmy little wiener both in his videos and in his replies to comments on his YouTube channel. His hand analysis is way too in depth. I've never actually watched a full video because I couldn't listen to him talk anymore.

    Taking Vegas (AKA: wheydacheese)

    Link to his channel.

    Sample video:

Brief description: Low stakes Vegas pro and frequent contributor to the 2+2 thread about Las Vegas poker vloggers.

    Pros: ...

Cons: I feel like this guy tries way too hard. Also, he needs a haircut.

    Jeff Boski

    Link to his channel.

    Sample video:

Brief description: Las Vegas poker pro who documents his MTT grind.

Pros: Seems to be the only vlogger who exclusively vlogs his MTTs which is a nice change of pace. He's been on an absolutely sick run since starting the vlog winning about $60K in Vegas tournaments over the past 2 months: http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/player.php?a=r&n=101781

Cons: Terrible at editing videos. Extremely monotone. Comes off as a real weirdo. He had a couple of really creepy videos that he has since deleted.

    ----

Do you know of any poker vlogs worth checking out?

There are honestly so many poker vlogs now that it's impossible to keep up. Maybe I'll do a summary of the absolute worst Vegas poker vlogs. Some are hilariously bad.

The Shrink's opinions on these vlogs all check out. Neeme's blog is very good. The guy is very relaxed, even in big pots. He has a lot of equipment too--drones and stuff. Bosky is fun to watch win tourneys so often. I wonder if he doesn't show a lot of losses because he is also advertising his coaching services. I prefer warts and all coverage. Tappan is watchable too. I enjoy his slightly cranky hypochondriacal New Englander humor. The Trooper is entertaining and his vlog is a window into the life of a grinder who really loves coffee but not furniture.

Surprised this thread was used on the show this week. Definitely a slow news week. I was legitimately laughing out loud during the radio bit when Druff satirized Jeff Boski describing how he would buy in to the tournament "...one hundred, two hundred, three hundred..." Funny stuff. With the pimp translation a few weeks ago Druff's on a roll for bringing the lulz.

Here are a couple more reviews. One good, one terrible. First the good:

    Zac Rockwell

    Link to his channel

    Sample vid:

Pros: Great editing and filming. He's a limit cash game player (pretty much the only poker vlogger who exclusively plays limit). Seems to be a regular in $40/$80 games. Anyone recognize him? So far in his videos he's spliced in footage from Live at the Bike and reviewed a hand or two. I believe he mentioned that he received permission to do so. He's friends with Limon so maybe he got permission through him.

Cons: Still a bit uncomfortable behind the camera. I'm sure he'll improve. Due to the nature of limit hold'em the hand analysis isn't too compelling.

    Now the bad:

    Alain Bao

    Link to his channel

    Sample vid:

Pros: Kind of feel bad about slagging on these people I don't know. They're putting out free content. I even saw that SrslySirius gave an encouraging comment to the "Smarmy Little Weiner" in one of his recent videos. If SrslySirius can find the good in a shitty YouTube video so can I. So I will say that Alain Bao is trying. And I think that's tops.

Cons: Just skip through the above video. You'll see.

Shoutout to poker vlogger Andrew Neeme for reading my postcard in his vlog, in which I give a shoutout to another forum member.

Druff mentioned that he will be talking about TheTrooper97 collusion controversy on the next radio show so here's an update on the Poker Vlog Wars of 2017 since I first posted about it in January.

So much drama. And it all centers on The Trooper.

Here's a basic timeline of events:

In January, Trooper and the PokerKraut made a weight loss challenge bet.

The terms were something like whoever lost the least amount of weight in three months had to do something "embarrassing" to be revealed at the conclusion of the bet. Soon after, Trooper started dating a big-tittied gal named Molly.

    Name: molly.jpg
Views: 10356
Size: 200.5 KB

Many were puzzled by this union but whatever, good for him. Trooper didn't seem to care about the bet now that he was crushing puss and he didn't really mention it anymore while eating his regular diet of burgers, pizza, and chinese food in the vlogs. I think this is where the real hate for Trooper began. His typical likes to dislikes ratio pre-January was about 20:1. Now it was about 10:1.

In March, Trooper and PokerKraut were supposed to have the weigh-in to see who won the weight loss bet. Trooper showed up late to the weigh-in and put out a vlog in which he basically said he didn't really care about the bet. He conceded defeat but the loser punishment was never revealed. At this point, PokerKraut even defended Trooper. This pissed off a lot of viewers.

At the end of March, Trooper started a series of videos called "Operation Uptick" in which he began at $1/$2 stakes and moved up to $2/$5 and then $5/$10 as he reached bankroll benchmarks. This was a fine idea that generated interest. He easily made his way through $1/$2 and then $2/$5 and then played a single session of $5/$10 where he got crushed. Mission over. Very anti-climactic.

Meanwhile, he kept putting out these horribly boring "mail time" videos. I guess it's standard for vloggers to give out their address so viewers can send them shit. I saw earlier in this thread that Mumbles sent Andrew Neeme a postcard during one of Andrew's rare mail times (which he smartly couched within a real vlog) - thanks for the shout out.

Then in May, Trooper did something called "Trooper Across America" in which he spent a month driving across the U.S. playing poker. People liked that feature. The real trouble starts when he got back to Vegas from that trip in June.

Everyone was asking him about two things - 1) where is Molly? and 2) are you playing in the "vlogger's game"? Trooper suddenly stopped talking about Molly during his trip. Finally, after about a week of questions he explained that they broke up. Don't know why it took him so long to say that. She was in almost every one of his videos for about two months so of course people were going to wonder.

Then there's the vlogger's game. Several of the poker vloggers mentioned in the OP planned a cash game to be live streamed on July 24. It will be hosted by a casino in Sacramento with the casino paying for flights and hotel. I believe the participants are: Brad Owen, Jeff Boski, PokerKraut, Andrew Neeme and a few others. They have formed a friendly network of Vegas poker vloggers, regularly featuring each other in their videos. Naturally, Trooper was invited because he's considered the OG of poker vloggers. But then he put out a vlog in which he says he wasn't invited to the game. Some of the other vloggers called bullshit on that claim, namely the PokerKraut who seemed to be finally fed up with Trooper's shenanigans. He stopped defending Trooper and even had a shirt made that says, "I wasn't invited."

Speaking of shirts, around this time Trooper started a poker apparel company called trooperware (www.trooperware.com). Hilariously, someone got the domain for www.trooperwear.com and made a parody site. I could go on at length about this topic but I believe poker-themed clothing is just about the worst thing in the world (just slightly above cancer of the anus). And poker-vlog-themed clothing? Jesus fucking christ. Anyways, Trooper started this company with some atrocious designs (e.g., a hat that says, "The Action is the Juice" but the "The" and "Is The" are so small it looks like the hat says "Action Juice."

Apart from spending half of each vlog talking about his store, he spent the summer not playing any poker at the Rio and getting killed playing $1/$2 around town. We also have the revelation about possible collusion in the past during single table satellites (I'll let Druff cover that). Now his vlogs regularly have a likes to dislikes ratio of about 4:1 (sometimes close to 1:1 when he does something particularly stupid like film a vlog responding to collusion accusations while driving down the highway). And his comments sections are full of haters.

Hating on The Trooper has become a bit of a sport. The 2+2 thread is basically just a Trooper hate thread and there is even a YouTube channel of a guy who makes videos shitting on him.

Recently, Jeff Boski has been firing shots at Trooper in his own videos.

Clearly, he thinks Trooper is a joke. By the way, I've totally turned the corner on Boski. At first I thought he was monotone and awkward but that dude is super funny.

Never thought I'd follow this stuff so closely but it's great theater. Sometimes I feel bad for Trooper but he doesn't do himself any favors. He will always be known as the original poker vlogger and he is the most prolific vlogger by far. However, his "poker fame" seems to have gone to his head with his narcissism leading to burnt bridges and a lack of humility when examining his own marginal poker game. Some people think he's on the brink of going broke. We'll see.

Great cliffs, Shrink. Thank you. I occasionally check in on some of the smaller vloggers and read the LVLS thread from time to time, but it's a lot to keep up with and I can barely get through any of Trooper's videos.

So what is Trooper getting out of lying about being invited to the vloggers game? I like your write up because it is too much for me to follow but I don't understand how lying about that benefits him. And why would anyone care if he doesn't want to talk about a break up? Who is out there discussing the ins and outs of breaking up with a girl? A lot of times the breakup process is slow and it isn't cut off at the head as well. People expected him to be like, "well I think my gf is fucking this black guy but I'm not sure."

Edit: I just checked out his clothing line and holy shit it is 100 percent terrible.

Trooper lies constantly, often irrationally about trivial stuff, but especially about things that make him insecure. My guess would be that the game plays bigger than he's comfortable with, or that he feels threatened by other poker vloggers and doesn't like them.

I love Shrink's writeups. Wish we'd see more of them.

He's not kidding about "Action Juice". What a fail!

And then there's the $29 shirts which look like they were designed in 30 seconds on MS Paint:

Any idea where he met Molly? My first guess would be something like Tinder, but you'd think a fairly hot chick like her would have swiped right on better looking guys than Trooper.
