Pokernews removes article criticizing poker as a profession, reporter quits after pros twitter tilt

So a columnist on Pokernews, Marty Derbyshire, writes an article (that Pokernews would later delete) criticizing playing poker for a living as a profession, which got quite a few "pros" upset and angry on twitter.

    Screenshots of the article:

Pokernews editor (and Howard Lederer fluffer) Matthew Parvis responded after the article was published (he claims "in error" lol) and the twitter tilt became too much to bear:

Marty Derbyshire would then later resign from his position (he has been playing the "Stephen A. Smith" contrarian role on the site for sometime now, and has gotten flack in the past summer from pros for writing stuff on tweets from Cate Hall, and Joe McKeehen, in the past).

The thing is: I agree with a portion of what he said. Was he crass and harsh and dismissive of playing poker, and those who do it, for a living? Yes. But it's not the easiest living either, and his frankness on what he saw from the outside looking in on the "profession" of gambling as a whole certainly had it merits and was a sobering take. Older pros like Todd Brunson even defended his opinion, and others like Doug Lee (actually WillieMcFML... LOL!) blasted Parvis and Pokernews for using Darbyshire's "contrarian" angle for clicks and then bailing once he wrote something too controversial.

All this proves really? That Pokernews is more irrelevant than ever.

    Good writeup.

Derbyshire was actually correct in calling out Cate Hall last July for her hypocrisy, even if Pokernews isn't necessarily the proper venue to do so.

Poker pros in general have been on his ass ever since.

Truthfully, Derbyshire wrote some stupid things, especially on a site which is supposed to be more informative than controversial, but as Willie pointed out, the editors there had final say, and they were fine with Derbyshire's posts at the time of publication.

In general, Pokernews has suffered since losing its best assets in Chad Holloway and Donnie Peters.

Shitty thing is that everything he wrote was 100 percent truth and the truth hurts sometimes and they didn't like it...fuck them anyways. I mean one of the big people who was piling on was none other then Brian Hastings who ironically announced he's quitting poker

Yeah Brian Hastings' tweets recently have been LOL.

He recently complained that poker players value money over dignity.

    Seriously.

    This from a recent multi-accounter.

No more affiliate/ad money coming in is what doomed PokerNews. Site will be extinct soon.

I was pretty excited about the start of poker central but I haven't watched in a long time...was really hoping for a bit more live coverage of tournies since Im The idiot that watches the 12 hours of no hole cards EPT coverage. For the life of me I don't understand why the don't have more in the arCHives of PAD and the like either

Poker Central is very inconvenient and extremely low budget. I have to fire up my roku whenever I want to see what is on and it's normally just some poker repeats from 8 years ago. They had a few new shows like the Pokerography series which were watchable and the Primetime Poker Report that aired in the summer time during WSOP but that is it. The show don't have episodes online and the new episodes rarely if ever got added to their on demand in the channel which makes the viewing experience tough.

Unless they get lucky enough to land a TV deal with cable in the USA (doubt it ever happens ) or in a few in various countries where it's lucrative that poker has an interest then I see them folding in the next two years.

The channel as it is right now probably don't cost that much to keep operating with the content they have acquired that they are replaying over and over showing some commercials during it.

If I had to guess Poker Central has lost money in starting up acquiring the shows they have but these programs didn't cost that much imo. They probably aren't paying for them still so their monthly losses are tiny to break offset by the commercials they show where they don't have to pump that much fresh money into keeping it going.

PAD is owned by NBC, and I know that Comcast/NBCSN uses some episodes to fill in dead time during the late evening hours.

I do agree they need more original programming, but that's hard when they can draw in affiliate money from a site like Stars which only operates in one state.

Cable companies must think Poker Central really sucks if they don't want to carry it.

They have virtually unlimited channel space now, unlike some years ago when there were only 69 (or something like that) available cable channels, even with a converter box.

The basic model is that the cable company either pays the provider (sometimes a lot of money, in cases such as ESPN and regional sports channels) or there's an agreement to carry it for free.

I'm surprised that Poker Central wasn't at least able to get carried for free (and then sell ads) by a lot of cable companies, but I guess it's been determined that there's little market for the programming.

I would've thought in some cases some wouldn't carry because they considered it promoting gambling in some places.. Then you get some places carrying TvG which is n othing but horse racing pretty much..

ive been watching a lot of EPT stuff lately, and tbh, IF i had cable, i wouldn't mind a channel like this to watch live events. there's plenty of them going on. if there can be a fucking golf channel, there can be a poker channel. but it's gotta be apart of the regular cable package, no ones paying extra for the golf channel ya know.

But I don't have cable just internet, and I stream most of my stuff to my tv via my laptop. but if i did......

I would watch religiously only because I enjoy watching poker (stupid I know). Thing of it is that I don't want to watch the edited shows with the best hands. I like watch every hand throughot the day and could care less about the hole cards. I don't want to watch the low budget HPT tour but if a channel did a good production like the EPT but did circuit events in the states I would watch as long as the production was good and they didn't use douchbag poker commentators

Ffs the drone racing on espn has a better production than most poker shows (PNIA, LATB etc). These reruns of PAD, HSC, and the other fail shows on Poker Central blow. Even the WPT episodes suck for me and I think it's just the color scheme of something because it just doesn't look real. I think it would bring some new live players into the game. The PS EPT stuff is great and all but not a lot of people watching and thinking about playing in Europe but anyone can pack up in the car and drive to Choctaw or something

Derbyshire returns to the poker writing ring with a review of the Cate Hall/Dentale HU Snoozefest

    http://www.uspoker.com/blog/hall-den...r-night/16822/

I just woke up from a very long, deep slumber induced by Poker Night in America’s “Grudge Match” between Cate Hall and Mike Dentale.

To say the live stream from Pennsylvania’s SugarHouse Casino was boring would be woefully understating it. The truth is, if this represents the future of poker broadcasting, we’re all in big trouble.

    Keyboard warriors fail to entertain

The R-rated Twitter spat that spawned the match suggested Hall and Dentale would engage in a war of wits and words when they hit the felt. Instead, Hall proved to be more keyboard warrior than entertaining TV personality.

She hid behind a pair of sunglasses and her smartphone most of the time and never once raised the level of her table talk anywhere close to what she displayed on social media.

To put it bluntly, Hall was boring. She may have won the match handily, but she lost all credibility as a player fit to carry any kind of broadcast.

Poker used to be filled with entertaining and engaging characters that TV viewers tuned in to see. The boom was built on the backs of these many personalities.

Somewhere along the way, a lot of that personality got sucked out of the game. Based on her online presence, it looked like Hall might be able to inject some back in. However, she turned out to be less entertaining than paint drying once the cameras started rolling.
