Pokerstars attempting to stop CA online poker bill from passing, due to penalty box clause

An online poker bill for the state of California is close to passing before the August 31 deadline, but Pokerstars and its partners are practicing obstructionism to stop it.

At issue is the new requirement to force Pokerstars (and all other online gaming companies who accepted bets in the US after 12/31/06) to sit out for 5 years before getting licensed in California.

I feel this is a fair penalty, as Pokerstars had those extra 5 years (actually 4 1/2) in the market to establish dominance, develop better software, and develop stronger brand recognition. So it's not far for them to just show up in the large CA market with that illegally gained advantage.

Anyway, Pokerstars does not like this, and is using its strong influence (va its card room partners) to obstruct the bill in the State Assembly, where a 2/3 vote is needed to pass.

If it does not pass Assembly, it will die.

If Pokerstars and its partners were to support this version of the bill, it would very likely pass and become law in 2017.

Instead, it looks like CA will likely have no legalized online poker for the foreseeable future, thanks to Pokerstars attempting to get a bill more favorable to itself.

    Two questions:

Have you looked at how poker would be taxed?

Are you in favor of this bill?

Said it before, you will rue the day legalized poker gets passed.

I guess we will quibble about what constitutes light regulation.

It's not ideal, but it has to be done.

We can't just leave this in the hands of shady offshore companies and assume it will all be fine.

I am in favor of this bill if the companies are all ok with it (with the exception of Stars, due to the penalty issue).

If small rake increases by PokerStars, the operator, were enough to crush dreams ...

Taxes are the worst rake of all and likely will make the games little more than entertainment.

But I guess it would be a moral victory.

I said this before too, you will look back fondly on even this past year as the golden age of poker.

Careful what you wish for and never make the 3rd out at 3rd.

Because politicians are in the pockets of these various tribes.

    Casino companies are such cunts.

Pokerstars is just mad they can't buy politicians like they tried to do in Nevada (which I think was part of the reason the DOJ started to crack down on these sites, amongst other reasons).

I am not sure how California politics work. But cant pokerstars or some other group get enough signatures to get A statewide vote on it? Thus cutting out these tribes?

If you live in California and want to play poker for real money on PokerStars just go to Mexico or Canada.

How long before someone gets raped, murdered or robbed in Mexico because somebody drove down there just to play on PokerStars?

Or how about American gets robbed and killed in Canada after crossing the border into Vancouver just so they could boot up their laptop and play on the shitty Pokerstars website.

It is just NOT worth it anymore for Americans to go out of your way just to play online poker.

Fuck PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and all the other piece of shit online poker douchebag companies.

They could have setup everything up from the beginning so it would be safe, secure, anonymous and easy to transfer funds and play anywhere in the world.

But no those companies had to pretend to be legitimate, then openly say "fuck you" to the U.S. government and then make a deal with the U.S. government to fuck over the players.

Putting poker in the hands of shady California tribes isn't any upgrade.

The gambling regulators in California are just as bad or maybe worse than Kahnawake. There is nothing in these bills that will overhaul California regulation. If there were, I doubt that any of the tribes would support online poker regulation.

Some of the California tribes treat their employees horribly. I've known people who have worked for them. Tribal land is essentially a separate country. There are no worker rights and no recourse other than complaining to an indifferent tribal counsel when employees are treated abusively. There have actually been complaints of employees being raped by their supervisors with nothing the victim could do about it. I doubt that the casinos are going to treat online poker players any better simply out of the kindness of their hearts.

We can see how the tribes have behaved throughout this entire process, which gives us a clue as to how poker players will be treated in California once legislation is passed.

Sanlmar: Find a book about the story of the first tribal casino, Foxwoods. This is sorta the playbook for this shite and is a great read with a great central character.
