Mesa, Arizona (The Weekly Vice) -- Samantha Abernathy, a 20-year-old Mesa woman was arrested Sunday after police found her toddler children abandoned all night and eating dog food.

According to Mesa Police, officers were called to the Sonora Canyon Apartments on Gilbert Rd around 7:30 a.m. after neighbors discovered two toddlers (ages 2 and 3) wandering the complex grounds alone. One child was described as wearing only a shirt, while the other child wore a shirt and a diaper.

When police figured out what apartment the children belonged to, they found the front door of the residence wide open. Inside the apartment, the floors were stained with urine and feces. The refrigerator was locked with a child safety latch and reportedly contained more alcohol than food.

Upon entering the residence, the youngest child went to a pantry, removed dog food and began eating it, according to the officer's report.

"We don't know if this child routinely eats dog food, but I can tell you when our officers felt bad enough they went and purchased food themselves out of their own money.......(the kids) ate it like they were extremely hungry," said Sgt. Wessing of the Mesa Police Department.

Investigators say the mother returned to the residence about 10 a.m., telling officers that she left the residence around 2 a.m. (8 hours earlier) to "help" an ex-boyfriend. She also reportedly admitted that she hadn't attempted to find a babysitter for the children and knew the they could have fallen down the stairs or wandered onto a Gilbert Road.

Abernathy, who is reportedly employed at a Phoenix strip club, was booked into jail on 2 felony counts of child endangerment and 2 misdemeanor counts of endangering the life of a minor. Her bond was set at $2,700
