    Techie help needed

I downloaded The Revenant and The Martian today. I have an iPad which I typically use to watch pirated movies while traveling. I use VLC player on the iPad. My question is what is the easiest way to watch these movies on my TV? TV is a 58" Vizio 4k UHD. I do have a 1 TB external hard drive. Can I just USB plug it into the TV? Will I need an app? Would Apple TV be the route I need to go (don't have currently). I do have an Xbox One also. Any options there? I do not own a laptop so I can't simply do that. The desktop computer has a 27" HD monitor so worst case scenario I can lay in the guest bedroom/office and just watch these on the computer but would prefer to watch in the living room with soundbar/surround sound etc
It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?

I'd imagine you could cast directly from your iPad to TV.

If not buy a chromecast for cheap.

I am on wifi so I suppose there is a way? For example when watching a YouTube video on phone/iPad I just press the button and it automatically shoots up and plays on the TV. But that's because the TV has a YouTube app. Watching a video I took with my phone I can't do this. Unless I can and I just don't know how? I honestly don't really understand what an Apple TV does or what it's needed for? Any help is appreciated

I just copy to a USB flash drive, my 65" Samsung plays most formats including MKV, my older Soniq will only play AVI & MP4.

4K UHD should play MKV no problems.

Red repping someone that offers some help, even if they did miss part of your post is pretty gay.

Anyway, I went through this same scenario a while back and found it to be more difficult than you would think.

I can tell you first hand that the streaming Bluetooth software does not work well with high def. It looks like shit on a 65" from my experience.

The only thing that worked well for me, as the person you red repped said, was an HDMI cable from computer to TV.

I do believe the Apple TV would be an option as long as the movie you want to watch can be supported by ITunes, but I haven't tried it so can't say for sure.

It's really all about the media player... If you can play it on a media player that you can mirror on your tv, like Chromecast, then you're good to go.

Update- so assuming it wouldnt work, on a whim I threw the files on the external hard drive and plugged it into the very convenient USB port on the side of the TV. I pulled up the file manager on the TV, selected the files, and boom it played them. This is pretty fucking sweet!

Both movies were in .Xvid-ETRG format. I read the user manual for my TV and it said it only supports common file formats (without listing them), but went even further to say typically only external thumb drives will work and hard drives and other media plays may not. I guess I got lucky.

xvid is a codec, and ETRG is the release group. The format would be avi or mp4, both common formats.
