Google is innovating yet again. They are launching balloons over New Zealand, meant to provide WiFi for people in rural and remote areas where high speed internet access is otherwise unavailable.

They will float at 60,000 feet. It is not clear if this could be a long-term solution, or if it's not viable to provide reliable internet access, but they are in the testing phases right now. I do wonder if they could be a possible danger for airplanes if one starts to sink and pilots are not aware of it.

would someone please decipher this article and reassure me that I do NOT have to worry about "weaponized word documents" please? holy fuck I mean Sonatine are you really out there protecting us from shit like this? if you are, that's amazing. I can't see how it's fucking possible to actually stay ahead of the genius types thinking of shit like this. I mean it's literally amazing (the malware anyway.) I am still amazed malware has been written to circumvent being detected in a virtualized environment. That's been my fool proof for a while now against opening suspicious files or programs (using a virtual pc I mean) so this just fucking sucks to read.

Sneaky malware hides behind mouse movement, experts sayResearchers from security vendor FireEye have uncovered a new advanced persistent threat (APT) that uses multiple detection evasion techniques, including the monitoring of mouse clicks, to determine active human interaction with the infected computer.
Called Trojan.APT.BaneChant, the malware is distributed via a Word document rigged with an exploit sent during targeted email attacks. The name of the document translates to "Islamic Jihad.doc."
"We suspect that this weaponized document was used to target the governments of Middle East and Central Asia," FireEye researcher Chong Rong Hwa said Monday in a blog post (http://www.fireeye.com/blog/technical/malware-research/2013/04/trojan-apt-banechant-in-memory-trojan-that-observes-for-multiple-mouse-clicks.html).
Multistage attackThe attack works in multiple stages. The malicious document downloads and executes a component that attempts to determine if the operating environment is a virtualized one, like an antivirus sandbox or an automated malware analysis system, by waiting to see if there's any mouse activity before initiating the second attack stage.
Mouse click monitoring is not a new detection evasion technique, but malware using it in the past generally checked for a single mouse click, Rong Hwa said. BaneChant waits for at least three mouse clicks before proceeding to decrypt a URL and download a backdoor program that masquerades as a .JPG image file, he said.
The malware also employs other detection evasion methods. For example, during the first stage of the attack, the malicious document downloads the dropper component from an ow.ly URL. Ow.ly is not a malicious domain, but is a URL shortening (http://www.pcworld.com/article/170498/Report_Finds_Reliability_in_URL_Shorteners.html?tk=rel_news) service.
The rationale behind using this service is to bypass URL blacklisting services active on the targeted computer or its network, Rong Hwa said. (See also "Spammers abuse .gov URL shortener service in work-at-home scams." (http://www.pcworld.com/article/2012800/spammers-abuse-gov-url-shortener-service-in-workathome-scams.html?tk=rel_news)
Image: http://images.techhive.com/images/article/2012/11/malware_skull-100011911-medium.jpg Similarly, during the second stage of the attack, the malicious .JPG file is downloaded from a URL generated with the No-IP dynamic Domain Name System (DNS) service.
After being loaded by the first component, the .JPG file drops a copy of itself called GoogleUpdate.exe in the "C:\ProgramData\Google2\" folder. It also creates a link to the file in the user's start-up folder in order to ensure its execution after every computer reboot.
This is an attempt to trick users into believing that the file is part of the Google update service, a legitimate program that's normally installed under "C:\Program Files\Google\Update\", Rong Hwa said.
The backdoor program gathers and uploads system information back to a command-and-control server. It also supports several commands including one to download and execute additional files on the infected computers.
As defense technologies advance, malware also evolves, Rong Hwa said. In this instance, the malware has used a number of tricks, including evading sandbox analysis by detecting human behavior, evading network-level binary extraction technology by performing multibyte XOR encryption of executable files, masquerading as a legitimate process, evading forensic analysis by using fileless malicious code loaded directly into the memory and preventing automated domain blacklisting by using redirection via URL shortening and dynamic DNS services, he said.

I got nosey earlier and found some file folder with spyware/adware origins that has to do with "effective measures" which, supposedly, is just for numbers tracking, trying to track where users go for advertisers. The files were in a secluded repository of shared objects in my flash player or something, Oddly enough though I did a little more digging and this crap is actually very likely spyware sent from broadband service providers for monitoring purposes kind of off the books. By making "effective measures" the bad guy big companies like comcast can get their hands on the info they want, like users web habits and general tone in public about comcast (meaning are users bitching online or are they happy, that sort of thing) and normally an ISP's official stance on this sort of thing is "no bueno without a subpoena." As if they truly value the privacy of their users rofl anyway this way it's a little bit discreet so I give them the nod for at least trying to be polite...Anyway block that shit like so:

1. go to _start button_
2. right click on _notepad_
3. select run as administrator
4. click on yes in prompt to continue
5. go to file menu in notepad
6. click on open file
7. select all files in drop down list before selecting _the file_
8. go to windows/system32/drivers/etc
9. select hosts file
10. copy contents over to notepad and then copy and paste the following at the bottom of the hosts file:

127.0.0.1 my.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 my-ssl.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 my-cdn.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 p.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 p-ssl.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 cdn.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 www1.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 www2.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 www3.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 www4.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 www5.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 www6.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 www7.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 www8.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 www9.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 ww10.effectivemeasure.net
127.0.0.1 www10.effectivemeasure.net

Consider creepy isp spyware sharing creepy modules in reclusive subfolders of programs (I don't even have installed on my computer as I use chrome!) fuckzered for the time being.

Wondering if anyone else has something good to add, tweaks to make shit load faster (am I fucking up using comcasts DNS servers? 75.75.75.75 and 75.75.76.76 honestly I used to use google's ( 8-8-8-8 and 8-8-4-4) and remember them working much better but for some reason I got the new dns from a nerdy friend who states this is the faster way to fly so I haven't reverted back yet but I'm getting close to it as page load times are creeping along here, in highly aggravating fashion)

Anybody have anything they find worthwhile to add please do (in the interest of networking strategy and good items to add to your hosts file mostly)

Forgetting your password is never any fun, but luckily there’s a really easy way to reset the password. All you need is a copy of the Windows installation disk and one simple command line trick.
*Resetting Your Forgotten Windows Password*

Boot off the Windows disk and select the “Repair your computer” option from the lower left-hand corner.
Image: http://cdn.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image.png
Follow through until you get to the option to open the Command Prompt, which you’ll want to select.
Image: http://cdn.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image1.png
First you’ll want to type in the following command to backup the original sticky keys file:copy c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe c:\
Then you’ll copy the command prompt executable (cmd.exe) over top of the sticky keys executable:copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe
Image: http://cdn.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image3.png
Now you can reboot the PC.
*Resetting the Password*

Once you get to the login screen, hit the Shift key 5 times, and you’ll see an administrator mode command prompt.
Image: http://cdn.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image4.png
Now to reset the password—just type the following command, replacing the username and password with the combination you want:net user geek MyNewPassword
Image: http://cdn.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/image5.png
That’s all there is to it. Now you can login.
Of course, you’ll probably want to put the original sethc.exe file back, which you can do by rebooting into the installation CD, opening the command prompt, and copying the c:\sethc.exe file back to c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe.

So a friend of a friend is a securities guy at a pretty large company and he has no formal education of any kind and is currently making $240k annually. He tells my buddy how he landed the job and it went like so- he applies for position, is being interviewed and the interviewer says "ok, so what can you do?" He then gets on a desktop closeby and proceeds to remotely open the cd/dvd drive of the interviewers desktop as he sits there watching. He is hired on the spot.

Needless to say I can't fathom a way to look at a fucking computer and guess it's precise location on a fairly large network but who knows, figured I would ask you. Is this guy full of it?

http://fiber.google.com/about/?utm_source=oa&utm_medium=display&utm_campaign=BannerA&utm_term=CNNROS&utm_content=About

Google is entering the ISP/cable business.

They are now offering 1 GB upload/download speeds (which blows away anything currently offered to residential customers) for $120/month, which includes TV.

They are offering the same without TV for $70/month.

Perhaps even more surprising, they are offering a slower internet (5 MB download, 1 MB upload, similar to today's budget cable plans) for *free*, guaranteed for a minimum of 7 years. The only "catch" is that you have to pay a $300 one-time "construction" fee to get this.

The 1 GB speed is almost 1000 times faster than the slower DSL/cable speeds of today, and still 50-70 times faster than most fiber optic customers (such as Verizon FIOS) are getting.

Keep in mind that a lot of the additional speed will be wasted for most customers, as the speed of loading web pages depends upon a variety of factors, including your computer's processing speed and the website's speed. Still, 1 GB downloads would be really sweet. For example, would allow you to download a feature-length movie in just *6 seconds*!

Unfortunately, this is only available right now in the Kansas City area.

I became aware of this forum via the DoctorCheckRaise forum.
This is my first post here. I hope this an appropriate subject.

I'm concerned about the number of times I've seen the same player make large bets (calls or raises) with a poor hands then
consistently hitting a "miracle" board.

Is this my imagination or are some players using poker spyware software to cheat their opponents?

Does anyone know if this type of software exists and, if so, how widely used it it?

It seems foolish for me or anyone else to play where an opponent can see my hole cards or the dealers cards before they are dealt.

I would appreciate any knowlegeable feedback. Thank you.

Running vista, trying to get windows 8 installed. I downloaded a usb installation tool for windows 7 from microsoft (assuredly it will work, so i am told) and the usb installation tool assured me windows 8 is locked and loaded on this usb.

Just plug it in, re-order the bios, golden.

This is not what happened (it is windows afterall, but still, I expect SOME shit to work the first time around) and for two days now I have tried a number of supposed fixes and solutions to get this stupid shit WORKING.

I asked a guy online who's pretty knowledgable his opinion, and he doesn't have time to squander on the little insignificant squawking pigeons making a rukuss around his feet so rather than wait around to be kicked and stepped on by the zion I am hoping for some advice here, probably from bootsy (I hope anyway)

Details- hp dv6000
dual core 1.6ghz
running vista (a brand spanking new, as of this afternoon, install of vista)
2gigs of ram I think, the laptop is fully capable.

I am getting this error message: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistadeployment/thread/8647c865-59a2-44dc-8be2-1a65731bbe38/

I have done the following- configured bios to boot from, well, just about every possibility, eventually restoring to defualt (which is boot from cd-dvd, then hd, then usb etc) nothing worked

I then took ownership of usb, nada. Took ownership of every single blasted file on the usb installer, nada.

Booted into recovery console and made sure disk 0 is active (and online strangely- like a raid volume? online?) and ran the following
bootrec /fixmbr ; bootrec /fixboot rebooted, back into recovery console bootrec /rebuildbcd C:\WINDOWS and this part is strange-at NO point was bootrec ever able to find a windows installation. Weird right?

Yet every command from bootrec (the three mentioned) came back with result code of success, no error messages.

bootrec /scanos shows 0 windows installations.

diskpart list partition shows disk 0 only, with 2 partitions (C and D, no MBR) and just two volumes (one for each partition) so-it looks kind of like

I am missing my MBR partition. Is this strange, and does anyone have a solution?

Jailbreaking iPhone 3G / 4 / 4S

First off, *I take no responsibility if you fuck up your iPhone attempting this*. Do this at your own risk. While these procedures are pretty solid, there is always a small chance you will "brick" your iPhone and cause it to become unusable, so don't attempt this if it will be a major impact on your life if failure occurs.

With that said...

This jailbreak is ONLY for the following: iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch 3rd generation, iPod touch 4th generation. It is *NOT* for the iPhone 3G.

Next, you need to figure out your OS version:

Go to Settings -> General -> About and scroll down until you see "Version".

At this point, it should either be 5.0.1 or 5.1.1.

If it is something else, upgrade to 5.1.1 through iTunes and come back here.

Also, if you have *anything besides an iPhone 4S*, upgrade to 5.1.1. If you have a 4S, you can leave it at 5.0.1 if you want, but you also can upgrade to 5.1.1 and this jailbreak will still work.

You will be downloading a program called Absinthe to do your jailbreaking.

Make sure to download the right Absinthe depending on your computer type and your iPhone (or iPad/iTouch) OS:

*Windows computer + iPhone software version 5.0.1*: http://cache.greenpois0n.com/dl/absinthe-win-0.4.zip

*Mac computer + iPhone software version 5.0.1*: http://cache.greenpois0n.com/dl/absinthe-mac-0.4.zip

*Linux-running computer + iPhone software 5.0.1*: http://cache.greenpois0n.com/dl/absinthe-linux-0.4.tar.gz

*Windows computer + iPhone software version 5.1.1*: https://sites.google.com/site/greenpois0nabsinthe/absinthe-win-2.0.4.zip?attredirects=0&d=1

*Mac computer + iPhone software version 5.1.1*: https://sites.google.com/site/greenpois0nabsinthe/absinthe-mac-2.0.4.dmg?attredirects=0&d=1

*Linux-running computer + iPhone software version 5.1.1*: https://sites.google.com/site/greenpois0nabsinthe/absinthe-linux-2.0.4.tar.bz2?attredirects=0&d=1

Most of you will be using one of the last 3 links, presumably the Windows + 5.1.1 link.

Once you have downloaded the correct verison of Absinthe, run it.

Follow the instructions it gives from there. You will need the wire that connects your iPhone/iPad to your computer's USB port, but don't plug it in until Absinthe asks you to.

Let me know if you have any problems.

If you want to save some time, you can skip the backup, but obviously you are taking on some additional risk.

Once you have jailbroken it, you will have a program called Cydia.

Cydia is where you download the various "jailbreak apps" -- underground apps that the Apple Store doesn't allow you to have. Some of them are free, while others cost money.

Here are some I suggest:

- SBSettings: A very useful app where you can slide your finger across the top of the screen and get access to all kinds of settings on your iPhone. Also very useful to free memory on your device without rebooting when it's acting sluggish.

- aTube or MxTube: Allows you to download videos from YouTube and save them on your device. This also gives you access to ALL of YouTube, and not the censored YouTube that Apple provides to you. It also lets you download the videos in full resolution, which Apple only normally lets you watch if you're on WiFi.

- Flashlight: If your iPhone has a flash with its camera, you can use this app to keep that light on for as long as you want. There are "approved" Flashlight apps in the app store, but this one is the brightest.

- User Agent Fake (UAFaker): Trick websites into believing you are on a computer browser instead of an iPhone, so you're not forced into terrible "mobile" versions of websites.

- TetherMe: This costs something like $5 or $10, but it's a one-time fee. It provides you with "tethering" ability -- being able to use your iPhone to provide your computer internet access. It can even do so wirelessly, making your iPhone act as a wireless router! This is especially useful if you are on the road or in a hotel. I know that AT&T charges you something ridiculous like $20/month to tether, and this allows you to dodge that charge. *Be aware that tethering is a HUGE bandwidth hog, so be careful using it if you don't have unlimited data!*

Also, if you have anything besides an iPhone 4S, upgrade to 5.1.1.

Windows computer + iPhone software version 5.0.1: http://cache.greenpois0n.com/dl/absinthe-win-0.4.zip

Mac computer + iPhone software version 5.0.1: http://cache.greenpois0n.com/dl/absinthe-mac-0.4.zip

Linux-running computer + iPhone software 5.0.1: http://cache.greenpois0n.com/dl/absi...nux-0.4.tar.gz

Windows computer + iPhone software version 5.1.1: https://sites.google.com/site/greenp...edirects=0&d=1

Mac computer + iPhone software version 5.1.1: https://sites.google.com/site/greenp...edirects=0&d=1

Linux-running computer + iPhone software version 5.1.1: https://sites.google.com/site/greenp...edirects=0&d=1

Be aware that tethering is a HUGE bandwidth hog, so be careful using it if you don't have unlimited data!

If Chrome is freezing your Windows 7...

I had a problem with Chrome flipping out on certain web pages and totally freezing my Windows 7.

The freeze would happen for like 5-15 seconds, and I was going crazy trying to solve it.

Finally I beat it, so I figured I might as well share it with people here:

If you see your Chrome do this (freeze the whole computer), look at the bottom of the browser. If you see "Waiting for Cache...", then you have this exact bug.

There is a relatively easy fix to stop the problem.

It involves a problem with the "User Data" folder for Chrome.

You just need to go to this directory:

C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome

Take the folder called "User Data" and copy it anywhere else on your hard drive. Like, for example, make a directory called "Chrome Data" under the main C: drive, and just copy the "User Data" folder to that folder. Don't copy just the contents of the folder. Actually copy the whole folder called "User Data" to where it now resides in the new folder you just created.

Now delete the "User Data" folder in the original location.

Finally, open up a console window (type "cmd" at the run prompt) and type the following:

mklink /J "[old location of UserData]" "[new location of UserData]"

Let's say your User Data folder was located at C:\Users\John\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome and you moved it to C:\googlecache

You would type:

mklink /J "C:\Users\John\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data" "C:\googlecache\User Data"

(ignore the space between Use and r, I don't know why the forum is doing that)

Don't bother with any of this if your Chrome isn't regularly freezing your computer. If you need help, just post here or PM me.

Recently an output of netstat -a gave an output of one established ftp connection. This is weird because I do not have any ftp software installed and never use it. I have no reason to.

The weirder part is that the connection persisted after closing down my internet connection. I could not kill the pid nor would it go away. I had to restart my system to get rid of it.

Whats up with that??? Sound fishy to anyone? Could this be evidence of SSH tunneling or similar? I feel confident I wiped out any malware I had but my network I am not in love with. I suspect there is something lurking someplace I cannot see but not 100% on that. My suspicion comes from, among other things, the fact that if ALL computers in the house are completely off and the router is rebooted as soon as it's back online its flashing like fucking mad with wireless internet connectivity. There is also a wireless connection always present, with no computers running. Weird?

Security- router has wpa2 with a fairly tough password, my mac i have locked down as best I can without TOO much effort. Root disabled all accounts have 8+ character passwords mixing numbers letters symbols etc, my firewall is set to deny all inbound connections and with little snitch i keep an eye on outbound. I mean what else can/should I be doing? If someone is breaking into my mac or using my network how can I find evidence of this? FWIW I tried packet capturing and was bewildered at the data I received. I have no clue what any of it means. I also have cocoa packet sniffer.
