The Oscar-winning star went into detail about the cause of his illness for the first time in an interview with the Guardian. It had been assumed by some that the cancer could have been related to his years of smoking, but the Basic Instinct star said it followed his contraction of HPV (human papillomavirus), a sexually-transmitted virus that is best known as a common cause of cervical cancer, but which can also cause throat cancer. Asked if he regretted having smoked, the actor told the newspaper: "No. Because without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV which actually comes about from cunnilingus.

"I did worry if the stress caused by my son's incarceration didn't help trigger it. But yeah, it's a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer." He jokingly added: "And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it." According to Cancer Research UK, HPV affects most sexually active people at some stage in their life, but is usually fought off by the immune system without causing harm. It is only on rare occasions that the virus "takes hold", eventually leading to cancer. Some 15 strains of HPV can cause cervical cancer. The most common of these, HPV-16, can also cause oral cancer, though it is not clear how often. It is also not clear how HPV can end up in the mouth, although some case control studies have suggested it may be through oral sex.

A study released this weekend said there is no need for patients who have developed cancer from an oral HPV infection to refrain from sex with their spouses or long-term partners. The study found that the spouses of patients with oral cancer caused by HPV did not have a significantly higher risk of developing the disease than the general population. "Couples who have been together for several years have likely already shared whatever infections they have and no changes in their physical intimacy are needed," said lead author Gypsyamber D'Souza, an epidemiology professor at Johns Hopkins University in the US state of Maryland. Long-term partners have likely already been exposed to the virus and managed to "clear" it, Dr D'Souza explained but added that "certainly, with new sexual partners, caution is always advised".

Douglas, 68, who is married to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, revealed in August 2010 that he had been diagnosed with stage four cancer after a walnut-sized tumour was discovered in his throat. At a House oversight committee hearing on the issue next week, lawmakers will focus on the August 2010 conference held in Anaheim, California, at a cost of $4 million. The LGA (http://www.lga.org.mt/lga/home.aspx), lotteries and gaming authority in Malta, which provided the license to allow PIV to run his operations is apparently doing nothing to help the players. None of the multiple emails that the players involved and I sent are being answered.

I just started a new job working with a fellow from Costa Rica. We got to talking and I found out that he worked for AP/UB for 5 years. He was in the consolidations department and also in withdrawals.

Obviously I grilled him all day with questions regarding Cereus and this is what I came up with. I trust his answers 100%, he has absolutely no reason to lie to me.

1. At one point, there was 300 employees working in Costa Rica.

2. Following Black Friday, employees were constantly let go. My co-worker was the one of the last few to leave. When it was all over, the owner and 5 other people stayed on for a few months to see if traffic would increase. He believes the owner will start another poker company eventually.

3. How it worked was they had a number of bank accounts with a number of funds. He estimates the company was profiting between 400k-1M per DAY.

4. The company would pay expenses from these accounts, and then all the profit would go to one of two banks in the owners name---he mentioned one of them was in Ireland. This happened daily.

5. When the DOJ seized the accounts, AP/UB opened new accounts. This was the time when they started to limit withdrawals to a cap amount. HOWEVER, the withdrawals were paid for with NEW DEPOSITS ONLY, since the other money was gone. After this, the profit was again taken out and deposited into the owners bank accounts.

As the amount of new deposits decreased, so did the withdrawal cap amount. Again, the withdrawals were paid for with new deposits, and the excess profit removed to the owner's bank accounts on a daily basis.

6. The company made a payment to the FBI 5 months before Black Friday. He believes this was a payoff of some sort and he estimates is was between 1-2 million.

7. The money is gone. He believes no one will see a cent of their seized funds from AP/UB.

8. The FBI operated as a payment processor: Linwood. This is how they were able to seize accounts on Black Friday, after 1-2 years of monitoring and filing banking account information.

11. Those working in the various departments had no idea about the cheating until the story broke. He believes the company paid all the outstanding debt they owed to players. He quoted $1.9 million but I thought it was more.

12. They paid people in the US and Canada (and probably Europe) to open bank accounts and act as rerouting payment processors. They would start small say 50k and then when trust was gained they would increase the amounts. Some of these clients were getting deposits in the millions into personal bank accounts, and then the company would use these accounts to process withdrawals and sometimes deposits. The people who owned these accounts were paid a percentage for the use of their accounts.

13. Many of the staff that got canned after Black Friday are now working for PokerStars and Full Tilt. Some of them he knows personally.

Bitcoin, the virtual currency libertarian geeks expect us all to use to pay for pizza in the future, has had a rough few weeks. A series of booms and busts have sent shivers down the spines of Bitcoin enthusiasts. Now, Gawker has learned that a much-hailed partnership between two of the most prominent players in Bitcoin, Mt. Gox and CoinLab, has devolved into a nasty $75 million lawsuit, which appears to be by far the biggest Bitcoin-related lawsuit ever.

The two companies are in the business of Bitcoin exchange, which plays a central role in the Bitcoin economy. For all the hype surrounding Bitcoin's promise as the "future of currency," at present it's not really good for buying much. So all those Bitcoin millionaires must exchange Bitcoins for actual currency if they want to actually get any use out of it. The trades on the exchanges also set the closely-watched price of Bitcoin. (Currently hovering around $100.) Mt. Gox is the world's largest Bitcoin exchange. It handles about $6 million in trades a day, accounting for 76 percent of trades worldwide, according to The Verge. Coinlab is a relative newcomer to the Bitcoin game, but has received notice for attracting $500,000 in venture capital and partnering with Silicon Valley Bank.

This February, Mt. Gox and Coinlab announced they were forming a strategic partnership. Under the contract, Coinlab was to handle all of Mt. Gox's North American services. It seemed like a perfect match: Mt. Gox has years of experience handling hundreds of millions of dollars in transactions, and a massive customer base, but they're based in Japan and so have can't serve American customers efficiently. Coinlab is a small but savvy upstart based in Seattle, looking to expand. The partnership would allow Mt. Gox to access the huge U.S. market handled by a capable partner, and Coinlab could latch onto Mt. Gox's reputation and existing customer base.

Mt. Gox founder Mark Karpeles (pictured, above) was enthusiastic in his press release on February 28th:

"This should be a huge win for everyone — faster deposit and withdrawal times, easier-to-reach customer service, and better access for United States financial markets, market makers and liquidity providers"
It didn't work out that way, according to a Federal lawsuit filed today by Coinlab's attorneys in Washington State. Coinlab alleges that Mt. Gox has breached a contract clause which was supposed to give Coinlab exclusive access to the North American market. "Defendants have breached the exclusivity provisions of the Agreement by directly servicing customers in the United States and Canada since the Agreement took effect," the lawsuit states.

Coinlab also says Mt. Gox hasn't allowed them to transition existing U.S. and Canadian customers from Mt. Gox to Coinlab, as agreed in the contract. "Despite repeated requests to do so, Mt. Gox has failed to deliver all passwords, Yubikeys, administrative logins and any other security information required so that CoinLab may assume operation of the Bitcoin exchange services for customers in the United States and Canada."

Coinlab is demanding $75 million in damages, and even that, it says, "likely underestimates the actual damages."

If it's true that Mt. Gox botched the deal, it's a big setback for the company, which has had a rocky past. An ongoing series of hacks, outages and other weirdness has led many in the Bitcoin community to question whether Mt. Gox is stable enough to be a major Bitcoin broker. Whenever Mt. Gox experiences downtime or a problem, the price of Bitcoin drops noticeably: Not a good look for what's supposed to be a radically decentralized currency

The Coinlab-Mt. Gox juggernaut was supposed to bring a new level of service, along with the legitimacy that came with the Silicon Valley Bank's backing, to Mt. Gox and the economy as a whole. The partnership was considered so important to the growth of Bitcoin that some observers credited it with sparking a massive 40% surge in Bitcoin prices past $250 when it was first announced, during which some big Bitcoin hold probably made millions. (At least until the price crashed back down again.) Now the biggest hope of Bitcoin has devolved into the biggest lawsuit.

Bitcoin might someday be utterly worthless, but it's clear there's big money to be made, and lost, right now.

(Mt. Gox's Mark Karpeles did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)

We have not been served nor notified of such a lawsuit (except from your email), so it is difficult for us to comment at this point in time. We will review this within the next hours.
Update II: Coinlab CEO Peter Vessenes gave some details about the lawsuit in a blog post. He wrote: "Today, CoinLab regretfully filed a formal complaint in Federal Court against Mt. Gox."

What tipped us into filing was our complete inability to get Mt. Gox to deliver on the few simple things left that were needed for customers to move over en-masse; we were often left just apologizing to our alpha customers while their own businesses suffered. I'm just not willing to put any of our customers in that position — if we can't do a good job for you, I won't promise that we can.

US basketball player Jason Collins has come out as gay, the first active male athlete in a major American professional team sport to do so. He declared his sexuality in an article for Sports Illustrated which began: "I'm a 34-year-old NBA center. I'm black. And I'm gay." Collins said he had struggled with his sexuality for years. Former NBA player John Amaechi came out as gay in 2007, but he had already retired. Former US President Bill Clinton was among those who sent messages of support to Collins on Monday. NBA Commissioner David Stern said in a statement: "Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue."

Sports label Nike, which has endorsed Collins, also supported his decision. "Jason is a Nike athlete. We are a company committed to diversity and inclusion," a statement said. In the Sports Illustrated article, Collins, who has most recently played for the Washington Wizards and the Boston Celtics, said: "I didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. "But since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn't the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, 'I'm different.' "If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I'm raising my hand."

He added that this month's bombings at the Boston marathon reinforced the conviction that he should talk publicly about his sexuality. "Things can change in an instant, so why not live truthfully?" Collins wrote. Collins, who is professionally a free agent, having played 11 seasons in the NBA with six teams, said he had tried to suppress his feelings through relationships with women. "When I was younger I dated women. I even got engaged," he said. "I thought I had to live a certain way. "I thought I needed to marry a woman and raise kids with her. I kept telling myself the sky was red, but I always knew it was blue." Collins said he decided he should go public after his former roommate at California's Stanford University, Congressman Joe Kennedy, scion of the Kennedy political dynasty, marched in a Boston gay parade.

As you may have noticed, we stopped processing transfers to Bitcoin exchanges this week. We’re very sorry.

In many respects it breaks our heart to have taken this step (we’re a firm that champions financial innovation after all), but we know our banking providers are not comfortable with Bitcoin and want payments to these firms restricted. This is happening everywhere - notably Bitfloor and Bitcoin-24 shut themselves down recently.

The banks – just like everyone else in the sector – are nervous because they don't know what to think of Bitcoin. The regulators and politicians’ silence on the topic leaves us all in the dark.

Financial firms make choices on the basis of clear rules. Without them, things like Bitcoin fall into the hands of those who use it for illegal activities. This leaves businesses like ours that meet their obligation to anti-money laundering and “Know Your Customer” procedures unable to deal with it.

It’s a shame because Bitcoin offers solutions to some of the absurdities of the traditional banking system. For example, a virtual currency like Bitcoin could dramatically speed up and reduce the cost of sending money abroad. It’s ridiculous that it can take four banks (all taking a cut) over a week to send dollars from a UK company to a Chinese producer. Implementing this change alone could save the real economy billions of pounds in card fees and transaction costs every year.

And it’s not just the big guys that would benefit. It could transform the prospects of millions of small businesses. The reduced cost and simplicity of a digital currency could circumvent laborious bank processes and give small merchants quick, fairly-priced access to online and mobile payments.

But to gain any of these benefits, the financial regulators need to take a stand. They have many questions to answer - how should the banks treat Bitcoin? Should it be regarded as cash or something new? Are new and specifically tailored “Know Your Customer” rules necessary? Unless the banks are told what is expected of them, they will happily keep on blocking Bitcoin, and consequently blocking our hope for financial innovation.

The Playoff

Beginning with the 2014-15 season, college football will enter a new era when a postseason playoff will begin. The format is simple: top four teams, two semifinals played in bowl games, and a national championship game played in a different city each year. Each semifinal will be played during the New Year's holiday with the national championship game in prime time on a Monday night at least a week later. It will be the best of all worlds, and the biggest innovation to the sport in decades.


The Selection Committee

A selection committee will choose the four teams for the playoff based on their performance during the regular season, including, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, championships won, and other factors. The teams will be seeded so that #1 will play #4 in one semifinal and #2 will meet #3 in the other, with the winners advancing to the national championship game.


The Rotation

The semifinals will rotate among six different bowls, extending the experience to more fans. In the years when the bowls are not hosting semifinals, the bowls will feature eight other teams in four compelling matchups.

Thousands of students at the University of California - Santa Cruz gather on campus on April 20 every year to celebrate '4-20' by lighting up marijuana at 4.20pm. One student went farther than most on Saturday when he unveiled a massive two-pound joint. In most states, possession of that much marijuana would be a felony punishable by several years in prison. In California, anyone with a prescription can legally possess up to an ounce of the drug. So, instead of arresting the owner, campus police officers simply confiscated it.

A video shows an officer carrying the four-foot-long joint. The owner of the joint is furious. 'You lied to me, too. Dude you're a liar. You're a liar.... I can't wait to see you in court. I can show how you're harassing me,' he says. 'We're going to court, man. We're totally going to court.' The two-pound joint is possibly worth $5,000 to $6,000. Even the poster of the video - who booed police for carrying away the joint - says the owner of the massive marijuana roll was asking for trouble. 'This guy had a booth set up to unveil this guy, shouldn't have drawn so much attention man!' the YouTube user writes.

Campus administrators at UC-Santa Cruz, 75 miles south of San Francisco, have long pleaded with students not to partake in the annual marijuana holiday. The term 4-20 is a reference to the California penal code designation for marijuana. However, because the gathering is so large and because of the state's marijuana laws, authorities are largely powerless to stop the gathering.
